ive had the iphone 4 now with vodaphone since july and have recently just come back from europe. my problem is i have checked my bill and it says i have £40 of charges but it is only showing charges that were used in the uk and a couple of texts that were sent from abroad and the total cost is only £4.50.
also i have noticed that sometimes when i have sent a text some friends have complained that they did not get it all or it has arrived as a multimedia text. even though i did not send it as that. some of the text i have sent are only 3 words long but vodafone have been charging me 13p a text. saying it is a long text. when i went to call them about this a few days ago there was an automated message saying there was a problem with text messages and they hope to sort out the problem.
when i called today the guy practically called me a liar and said that at no time did they ever have that message and i am sending multimedia texts.
if i am then i have no idea what im doing wrong cause all i do is write a text and send it with no pictures.
can anyone help
thankyou

Smart phones check for updates all the time (Email, weather, Facebook etc) so will use data. The iPhone has a slider on the data roaming under settings that should prevent this and is by default off, did you activate data at all? Depending on where you were in Europe you could be charged up to £8 a mb of data if you don't have any bundles on the phone.
Charges can take a few days to get back to the home network, depending on where you were and how quickly they send the data back, it could be a few days till all the charges show in detail.

Texts are NOT a guaranteed service, they are valid for a set time on the network and then expire if not delivered, if you sent the text and it got stuck or the recieving phone was off or not reachable for a few days then it could have expired.

Other than that messges not sure about the problem. Sometimes if someone has sent you a message with an image in it and you reply to that message the phoe will default to a MMS message rather than a email or text. Could that be the cause?

I have every text I ever sent and received and checked them all and not one of them should be classed as a mms and I did turn of data roaming and received text saying I has 25 mb a day allowance to use in Europe I did go over it a couple of times as I got text saying this but then I got a text saying I had used my 50 pound allowance and got cut of but I can't find any of the calls or texts I made on my bill

Even if MMS use data, it wouldn't be a lot. Calls and texts don't use data.
Either your data roaming was not turned off or your phone is faulty:

Complaints over erroneous iPhone data roaming charges

Why your texts were charged as MMS is a separate question. Don't waste time on phone calls. Complain by a e-mail or in writing. Demand an investigation.

    Hi hook,

I am sorry to hear that you have had some problems with your bill.

It's certainly odd that your texts are being sent as MMS but I am happy to look into this further for you. I can also then take a look at your additional charges on your bill.

Can you send me an email via the address here with WRT135 FAO Heidi in the subject and include a link to this thread.

    Many thanks,

I had a similar issue with my WP7 phone on Orange a few months back. It seems that some 'unusual' characters in a text that I was sending was causing the SMS to be converted to an MMS - could this be a similar situation?
