Hiya! As some others on here have mentioned - I would also recommend trying local independent jewellers. We got ours from an independent - the same place that made my engagement ring and because we went back to them we got a really good discount!

Mine was 18ct yellow gold - I think it was 2 or 2.5mm (not paying attention to thickness just seeing what looked prettiest! :rotfl:) and even without the discount it was only £195. OH went for a fairly thick palladium band and his was only £380, which I think is pretty good!

You get such a lovely level of service going to an independent store and its nice to be able to go to the same place for engagement ring, wedding rings and, hopefully one day, eternity ring ;) They can also be really helpful with Bridesmaid / best man gifts.
  • Will be watching this with interest also, having looked at Betts just seems too good to be true! I presume it's not hallmarked?

Just looked at the website again and hallmarking is one of the things they will do under "Jewellery Services" presumably for a charge if you are providing the metal?

Their stock gold and platinum rings are described as hallmarked when you start searching for specific rings.

    Sounds like a good deal.

  • Just an update guys and to thank you all for your advice!

We got our rings yesterday from a lovely independant jewellers who spent so much time with us and showed us many styles etc and explained everything we needed to know. Mine is an 18ct and platinum 2.5mm that fits perfectly and is so comfortable and really compliments my engagement ring and H2B's is a 4mm palladium. They came in on budget and we also got a nice discount too :-)
:T Looking forward to the future :T
  • I have had my white gold wedding and engagement rings for over 32 years and they are both still as white as they ever were. The engagement ring wasn't expensive, it was from H Samuel, though the wedding ring is an 8mm flat band which was made in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter for £75, which I suppose was relatively pricey in 1979 (about a month's mortgage payment so not really really costly).

It's entirely possible that your white gold rings never required rhodium plating because that long ago, good quality white gold was not made from the same alloys (blend) of yellow gold and other metals as the less expensive contemporary versions. Mine are 36 years old, and are not rhodium plated either, and are still nice and white. Since rhodium plating became common and accepted for white gold pieces, the trend seems to have gone to less expensive alloys, since the rhodium will cover it. However, white gold primarily alloyed with palladium or platinum, along with the other alloy metals still used, does not require it even now. Better quality gold was much easier to come by and afford when gold was still under $200 an ounce.

  • Has anybody bought their wedding rings from Goldsmiths? We're getting married next year and are thinking of saving up our Tesco Clubcard points to triple or quadruple up for Goldsmiths vouchers to pay towards our rings.

Just wondered what others thought of their rings if they had been looking there or bought from them?

If you are paying entirely with Clubcard Vouchers, then Goldsmiths are not going to be beaten.

Otherwise, I would go for Betts.

Our wedding rings came from them 3 years ago and are white gold. Not rhodium plated either and still white gold in colour. Mine gets a fair amount of abuse as well!

Our two rings weighed 21.5g altogether in 18ct and cost £485 - obviously they will be a lot more now (more like £800), given the price of gold!

I don't think we'll get enough Clubcard points to pay entirely with vouchers, guess it'll be a wait and see how many we can collect during the year! Thanks

    Hi

I have been trying to price up wedding rings. I'm looking for an 18ct white gold plain band and have found that argos are alot cheaper than anywhere else. Has anyone any experience buying wedding rings from there?

    Many Thanks!

I have used Weddingrings-direct for both the engagement and wedding band - great service, speedy delivery for a bespoke ring and a great price (my budget meant I could go up to platinum there whereas I would've only (?!?) had gold on the high street.

Discount code for 5% here that I've used but may work for someone else:
    2580-2012

    and again for £10 off:

    good luck!!
