value for money wedding rings

Hi

I have been trying to price up wedding rings. I'm looking for an 18ct white gold plain band and have found that argos are alot cheaper than anywhere else. Has anyone any experience buying wedding rings from there?

Many Thanks!

How wide do you want it? And what weight. Some cheaper rings are almost paper thin.

My OH got his from Ebay, after working out what weight he wanted, and couldn't get the exact right one in the high street shops. He got a really nice heavy 9ct yellow gold one for about £150 I think. (7mm wide, and it's about a mm thick).

I got my 2mm white gold 18ct from Ernest Jones. Their 'super heavy' one, as it sits a bit higher and suits my engagement ring. That was £335, discount to £295 with a 15% off voucher I had. I really like it, and looked at lots before choosing it.

My OH got his from samuels - a bit dearer than argos but seemed nicer and were still pretty reasonable
  • I (like many others on here) recommend Betts Metals. If you sign up for an account as a hobbyist you can buy from them at trade prices. They literally times the weight of the ring by the gold price at the time and add VAT. High street retailers add up to 50%.

We got mine for £160. It's an 18ct white gold 2.5mm heavy weight band and OH's was £140 for a 5mm palladium one.

The customer service is fantastic too :)

Try looking in some independent jewellers; they often have better value for money than the chains and may be more open to negotiation. It's worth a try.

I think our wedding rings will be from bandsoflove.co.uk as they're cheaper than anywhere else for what I want (Platinum 2.5mm Court) and I've only heard good things about them.
  • Thanks Guys,

I think I want a heavy weight one but not quite sure on thickness, maybe it's best if i go to a jewelers and try some on. I will certainly have a look at betts and the others, i had no idea you could buy at trade! I doubt i will get it from argos as i imagine it will be quite light. I was impressed with the price though.
    Thanks again!

For the price I can't recommend Ernest Jones, sorry. My hubbie bought me some wedding jewellery from them and had to send it back because the quality was so poor. After a bit of online reading we found that for the price the quality is generally found to be poor compared to the prices they charge.

We bought our wedding rings from Wedding Rings Direct - http://www.weddingrings-direct.com/ - and they are lovely. The prices are extremely good and the rings are great quality.
  • As others have already stated, you do need to be looking at the weight of the ring, as it's the amount of gold in the ring that affects the price. I've found there is no standard classification between the sites/shops either. One shops super heavy weight can be anothers medium weight, so always compare using grams.

You will NEVER get the best price from highstreet store. I second what Lucyh81 says, highstreets adding 50% mark ups.
These are the prices I have found for my husbands ring. (I am having to buy him a second ring as he has lost his first after a week!)

9ct, Yellow Gold, D Shape Ring, 5mm, Heavy Weight, Size T.

    Weddingringsdirect - 5.6g £178.50
    Bandsofgold.co.uk - 7.8g £219.99
    Geraldonline.com - 4.5g £150
Betts Metals - 6.0g £91.94 !!! This is the trade price but again, like lucyh81 says you just
need to register as a hobbist and you get if half the retail price!

I bought my husbands first ring from Betts. It came completely unpolished with a very sharp edge, not the rounded D shape I had ordered. I was very disappointed and thought I was going to give myself away as an ameuteur by quering this finish. There customer service was very helpful and efficient in their response and they offered a polishing service at a small price (was under £10). It came back perfect so I am very happy to use them again (I have stated I want the polish in the order details this time round).

Hope this is helpful. I don't know if you would find something on ebay cheaper as this would be dependent on whether it was a store or independent seller wanting a quick sale. I however am more inclined to trust a business than a private person. More come back, but... you never know, you might be lucky and get a cracking bargin. You know what they say...right time... right place ....and all that.
