Mileage difference will probably be down the the garage using it as a runabout, it's very common, even main dealers do it.

What? By nearly 8k? Are you serious?

Surely you inspected the car before paying ?

    Hi

i am not a mechanic or expert in any shape of form when looking for cars and as said not used to buying second hand cars - i did my best with the money i had and what was available - the tread and cracking was only present on part of the tyre (so when parked the tread could have been underneath!)

But yes i did look at the tyres

thanks everyone for your advice - will be contacting trading standards tomorrow

The handbrake light keeps flicking on while driving.
Looks like you could be very low on brake fluid! Be sure to check asap. Low brake pads are usually this symbol (0)

    :(

No - brake FLUID low indicator / an immediate problem with the braking system.
  • been advised by consumer direct to send another letter and get certificate of delivery, which have done giving the garage 14 days to repsond. His latest line this morning was the tyres were probably swapped by yourselves as you drove to the garage in another Ford car! Unbelievable, I own a vauxhall corsa which i drove to the garage in and do not have access or own another Ford car

    the lies continue..............................

If the Ka has wear sensors, don't know it does. Could be low brake fluid (if it has a sensor it will have wires to cap of the fluid reservoir) or sticking handbrake switch.
  • I can kinda see it from the garages point here too. Sure it is very wrong to sell a car with illegal / dangerous tires, but why did you not take it back to them rather than getting them changed at another garage? You could quite easily be trying to con him out of 4 new tires and he is paying the cost of another garage fitting them etc.

If you had contacted him as soon as you realised the tires were illegal he may have suggested you bring it back and he'd change them for free or even sent you to a garage near you. The problem is it is now much harder to prove they were illegal when you bought the car.

This is what I've been thinking all the way through. I don't doubt your story but you have made it that much harder to get it fixed.

Remember, if they had been forced to put tyres on they would have only paid for the tyres themselves and not the labour so they could have done it at a much lower cost to themselves.

The other garage might be happy to back you up on the state of them but again, they will no doubt says "of course they told you that, they wanted to sell you four tyres".

Contact TS, if there are other complaints, you might have more leeway. Also think about contacting the local press, bad publicity and all that. The other garage might get some free positive publicity from it too.

If a dealer is prepared to sell a car with the tyres in that condition I'd be asking myself what else might be wrong with the vehicle !

I'd get a friendly mechanic to give it the once over

When I went to buy my Mondeo I noticed the tyres were low because I actually checked them. Also noticed the brake pads were a bit thin as well as you could see them. I made getting those changed as a condition of the sale. Meant I had to wait a couple of days but I picked up a car with a new set of tyres and not only new front pads but discs as well and an oil change to boot.
