Sorry to be a total geek when it comes to readers but is reading a book all you can do on it.

Could you not download a book on an ordinary tablet, therefore having a computer and a reader.

I tend to pay 50p for my books at car boot sales, probably the reason I wouldnt have one really
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You can subscribe to newspapers, periodicals and check email etc., it is more the convenience and when travelling you are not carrying loads of books in your luggage, so far we have downloaded more than 800 books for free.

Really you need to consider the initial outlay and the use you will get out of it, personally we find it worth it.

Kindle is fantastic in every way..I had room in my luggage this year on holiday for loads of duty free because I didn't have to bring 6-7 novels :j
No reliance should be placed on the above, as i don't believe anything i say either...
  • Another option is the Kobo reader. It has Wi-Fi and uses ePub as their standard. WH Smith do them for about £80 but with vouchers or quidco you will not have to pay that.

I have an Sony E-Reader which I think is excellent but costs more than the kindle (unless you get one of the price matching promotions that Sony sometimes allow)

I also buy most of my books in charity shops and then I 'find' electronic versions on the interwebby. Quicker than scanning them into my PC and converting :-)

I had a £40 a month paperback habit and now I rarely pay for books, I have my tech manuals for my camera etc on there and it's always with me, just done my first foreign holiday without sneaking the extra books into DH's case LOL. Also managed to download books whilst away so I could read the next in series and the last of the trilogy. I was that woman who said I will never have a Kindle I love books but I am converted. I sell tablets, they are great but the kindle is lighter and has no backlight so no eye strain, the battery life is longer etc etc

  • Oh, and the free software "Calibre" is fantastic for converting books for the Kindle.

Yet another kindle convert here and my daughter is 10 and has asked for one for Xmas, there are plenty of classics and modern children's books available for the kindle. I just wish amazon did a children's account that could only access children's books that way I could add gift vouchers to my daughter's account and she could select and download books.
  • thanks everyone defo going for the kindle, where does everyone get the free books from? i thought i would have to pay for them all
    thanks

Free books are available from the Amazon Kindle website, and elsewhere, Project Guttenberg to name one.
