  • He can spend the inheritance on anything he likes. No one can or will try to force him to spend it on anything.

I'm interested to know if you think all over 60's on a low income should be able to claim housing benefit and pension credit when they have thousands in the bank?

    I don't want pity thanks.

I had a pension plan, still do actually. Pensions used to be fairly common with jobs and there was lots of information available to people about them years ago so it's not really the states fault that your father didn't bother with one and then lost his lump sum is it?

Your parents are receiving money that may push them over the threshold for claiming benefits. Some people work really hard to throw their 20 or 40% into the pot so why should your parents be allowed to continue taking from the pot when they have means to support themselves for a while?

Oh and to add, no one "qualifies" for an inheritance. It's sheer luck, it's not some entitlement that when your parents pop their clogs you're entitled to money for nothing.
  • And what knowledge did YOU bring to the table? I was calling YOU ignorant, not the people who offered their knowledge, you offered nothing, therefore, you are ignorant.

I have the knowledge (others got in first) you are the one who is ignorant.

NB. You tend to get a negative reaction if you ask people for loopholes so that someone can hang on to their own money and live on ours.

If you don't want pity, why bring it up in the first place? Why attention seek if you don't want the attention.

Seriously, read the OP. Then reply.

"I'm interested to know if you think all over 60's on a low income should be able to claim housing benefit and pension credit when they have thousands in the bank?"

Read the OP. He has no problem paying his way, it sort of comes with being self employed for so long. But what is stressing him out is not knowing whether he is allowed to spend any of it at all, on anything. Is he going to get into trouble if he books a holiday? Is he going to get into trouble if he buys a fridge or a car? 95% of it will go on the bills, but what is he "allowed" to buy, and what isn't he allowed to buy?

One person offered advice, then you and your half sentence. So far, you have given nothing to this thread that shows you have any knowledge.

Also, I didn't ASK for a loophole, I mentioned I had read somewhere online, a BBC article infact, that a loophole had been exposed and whether this loophole was real or not.

I'm not seeking attention, everyone on here knows because I've been a member for years and it's the sort of thing that comes up.

My point was that you can't say that because someone has worked for however long they're entitled to x, y and z. Some people can't possibly work that long and that doesn't make them any less entitled to enjoy the perks that come with an inheritance.

It's not my problem that your dad didn't bother to get a proper pension so why should I be paying his way now that he can afford to do so?

If you google deprivation of capital then you'll see that the whole "what can i spend" is a serious sticky situation and it's best getting individual advice from your council/dwp etc. Usual rules are you can replace furniture on its very last legs with a reasonable replacement (not a 4 grand american fridge unless your last one was like that), a reasonable holiday (expensive cruise is probably out), and replace the family car if it's essential. You can't give money away or pay off bills that aren't being enforced through a court. Anything over £6,000 will decrease their benefits and if it goes over £16,000 then there will be no benefits payable until the council/dwp determine that the money should go below £16,000 with full entitlement kicking back in when the money "should" be below £6,000.

Now if you'd asked nicely you'd have been told all that ages ago.

You were the one that asked whether YOU QUALIFIED for inheritence now, you seem to be getting yourself confused.

Actually I asked if anyone wanted to give me a few grand, I didn't say anywhere I wanted an inheritance.
  • , if any of you got your heads out of your !!!!!! you would realise that my dad has paid MORE TAX THAN ALL OF YOU PUT TOGETHER.

    .

I'd love to know how you can claim that!
