Paying Car Insurance but was not covered

Hi GUys,

I am new to this forum. I was with Halifax car insurance and had my astra van insured on it. When I went to get the policy renewed, they said that I would not be insured on it as they do not cover Astra vans. Then then went onto say that I was never covered during my previous 2 years.

How would I go about getting the premiums recliamed for the last 2 years? Is that possible.

Any help greatly appreciated.

  • When you asked if you were getting a refund for the premiums you'd paid, what reason were you given for them telling you that they won't be refunding you?
  • Hi,

They said that it was my responsibility to ensure the paperwork was right.

They also said that they go by the information that I gave them. The information is correct.

I am in the process of completing a subject access request to get all documentation etc.

Have they given you a reason in writing as to why they did not consider that your were covered? Were they still taking your monthly payments during this time?

    Hi,

Nothing was ever sent in writing. It was said over the phone. They did say that they never covered vans. As I did not renew, the payments did not continue. But during the 2 year period I was paying monthly premiums.

You presumably have insurance certificates to cover the last two years? I am wondering if Halifax have decided not to insure vans from now on so that when you went to renew they told you this, but the operative you spoke to has added fuel to the fire by stating you were not covered previously. The person you spoke to could have made an incorrect statement of course. I guess you will have to wait for the written response from Halifax to your subject access request.

  • How was the vehicle referred to on the insurance certificate?

  • Hi,

I have now got a CD of all conversations, and all the paperwork as pdf files regarding my insurance with Marks & Spensor (BiSL). It was not Halifax as previously thought.

What information should I be looking for?

Quote details, proposal / statement of facts and schedule along with any other documents relating to the actual vehicle.

Any conversations that you or they state the type of vehicle eg van or car etc

Quite simply this. When applying, most likely online, he would have said he had a Vauxhall Astra. His insurance company do not cover commercial vehicles - the van derivative of the Astra is a commercial vehicle. I suspect this is the first time in the two plus years the fact it is has come to light.

Don't they know what the vehicle is from the registration number?
