Hi
I bought a Dell Laptop 6400 in July 2006 and in December the keyboard developed a fault in that everytime you pressed the "W" key it keyed "WE". i bought it on my visa/mastercard ( not sure which ) i did not opt for the year collect and return ( mainly because i could not afford it ) Do i have any rights in getting it repaired ? I have all the paper work etc.I did email that girl Katherine from Dell whose email was on another thread but have not heard back. I entend to ring them direct on Monday. can anyone advise me ?
Thanks

Log onto the Dell website: https://www.dell.co.uk
Go to 'Customer Care', then 'Contact Us' then 'Technical Support'.
Leave your message.
Its still under warranty and someone should be able to talk you through the problem and fix it without you having to send it back.
I have found them very helpful0 -
This weekend my OH has been asked by two different people to repair their computers. Both are Dell laptops and both have faulty keyboards. Both faults involve keys that are next to each other which is what you are experiencing.
I was researching a Dell laptop for a friend but after this weekend have decided that it would be better to look elsewhere.
Dell use local agents for a lot of their repairs so it may well be that they will ask you to take it to a local repairer for inspection. Their machines used to come with a one year basic warranty so hopefully you will be covered under that but you will have to make the effort to get it to the repair centre they nominate. That may have changed though, its a while since I bought anything from Dell.0 -
Try not to telephone them - its a 0870 number and they take ages to put you through to the right department0

Have a look on saynoto0870 there is a cheap number .0

Go here http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/my_systems_info/en/details?c=uk&l=en&s=gen and enter your service tag (you'll find it on a label on the base of the laptop. That'll tell you how much warranty is left.
I suspect you've misremembered the warranty info as the base warranty on 6400s is 1yr collect and return so it's almost certainly covered.
If you follow the troubleshooter here http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/dsn/en/entry?c=uk&l=en&s=gen then a call will be raised at the end of the process. That helps to avoid expensive calls and language issues. What goes around - comes around0 -
Thanks you so much. i remember just before purchasing the laptop being advised on MSE to opt out of something to reduce the price and i thought it was the "collect and return"zappahey wrote:Go here http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/my_systems_info/en/details?c=uk&l=en&s=gen and enter your service tag (you'll find it on a label on the base of the laptop. As Zappahey mentions, go to the Dell support site and enter your service tag, follow the instructions to get a response.
However, I would suggest you browse the Dell user forum and you'll see how common the fault is.
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_general&message.id=236474&query.id=449577#M236474 is a thread that might help, there is a suggestion that you could try reseating the connector. Don't try following the instructions about the 'k' keyboard screws -Dell's page with that information is here (the 6400 and 510m are the same); http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins510m/sm/keyboard.htm
HTML manual is here;

thank you for your replies have emailed them .so hopefully will get sorted.0

Emailed the link above to dell support and they emailed a link back to "reset the keyboard" by changing the language settings on the keyboard, saying this will correct the setting of system keyboard . well it didn't work....0
