Do your parents pay/contribute towards your tuition fees?

Options
Presuming that you aren't a mature student, I'm interested to know whether anyone's family chip in towards tuition costs (not maintenence)?

Mine don't, I have a tuition loan from the SLC... But I know that a lot of my friends (whose parents earn much less than mine) have theirs paid for them, or at least get some kind of contribution towards them.

Just curious!

  • Graduated 2001: My parents paid my fee's and gave me money towards food.
Did my masters in 2002, paid my own way for that one

BUT.. they could have put me through private school like their friends did with their kids they didn't, which would have set them back far more than funding me through uni. They also said they'd only pay for me if I worked hard during the summer

    Go Mum and Dad
  • In my first and second year at uni my parents paid for the tuition fee (at around 800 quid) but in my final year i dumped the amount on top of my student debt by the use of a tuition fee grant which came in, in sept 2006. Its up to me for rent but i wouldnt of been able to afford it without my parents assistance in the first two years
  • i live on my own so dont get anything nor would ever accept anything except chrimbo/birthday pressies etc. coz im under 25 my incoem is assessed on them still but they dont earn much so i get full laon and grant which suits me fine, i dont mind having to pay it all off later coz its only a few quid a month out of most wages.

  • Damn, I feel like I'm getting a raw deal... I keep saying that because of the fact that they assess your eligability for a bursary by looking at your parents income, therefore they must expect parents to contribute something?

I don't know what I'd do if I was living away from home. My dad earns an unspeakable amount, and all I get is a birthday present (we don't officially celebrate xmas, though my nan gives us stuff)... It's just annoying that £3000 would be nothing to him, but is everything to me! *shrugs*

Feel free to call me a brat ;)

He's probably trying to 'teach you the value of money'! My family is a bit like that - i've never, ever been spoilt and i've pretty much had to work for everything i've got but my mum would give her last penny if she thought it would help me out, but dad is a different story! He thinks I should have to suffer and learn everything the hardest way possible. My parents are selling their house and stand to make quite a bit out of their equity, so me and mum had this idea that thy could buy a flat and i'd rent it off them or they could 'gift' me my inheritance early in order to get a place of my own. Dad vetoed the whole thing, saying 'we never had anyone buying us a house when we were young, these kids want everything now blah blah'. I tried telling him that when he was my age houses were no where near as unaffordable as they are now but is answer was 'work hard and you'll get there'. I can see his point, but I am working hard and all i'm succeeding in doing is lining my landlords pockets :(

Anyway, sorry for the rant, you get my point!

Insteresting post, you're in a similar situation to me. Though my dad is nasty... He saved my child benefit for 19 years to pay for my uni fees, then when I asked for it to pay me fees, he told me to get a loan and bought our house with it! His argument is that my child benefit pays for my room

I'm pretty darn good with money though. I have a few thousand saved up to tide me over, but I pay a ridiculous amount for transport per month, and it pains me when paying it! I am grateful that they have made me appreciate the value of money, but still... a little handout once in a while would be a nice gesture.

My nan is a bit like your mum... If I needed money, she would help me out. But I do think that there's a huge difference between being sensible (like my nan), and being downright stingy (ie my dad).

Hrm, I have an immense fear of living at home for the rest of my life. There's no way I'd rent, as I also see it as 'lining the landlord's pocket'. Seems like a waste when I have a perfectly decent room at home, and am only 45-minutes away from uni (by train). Still it would be nice to have a little independence instead of living with a bunch of hormonal teenagers (the siblings).

I get about 88% of my tuition fees paid for by the government. Last year my parents paid the rest (to the tune of around £300!).

This year they can't afford it so I've opted for a "tuition fee" loan instead that pays the university automatically.

i dont get a bean from my parents, my old man is a total miser when it comes to money, i wouldn't even try asking him for any help. which is fair enough, he's had to work hard for it.
having said that the government have helped me a lot, i wouldn't have come to uni if i had to pay full fees.
i can sympathise with the posters who'd like a bit of help starting on the property ladder. my dad actually has another house he rents and is looking to buy another. he has brought the subject of inheritance tax up and suggested putting the house in my name while the rent was still paid to him. then he had a think about it and dreamt up the idea i would marry some bird who would divorce me and claim half the house while he was still alive. so he'd rather i pay the tax man when he pops his clogs.
What's it going to be, eh?

my mum and dad agreed to pay my tutition fees but if i lived away then id have to pay rent and bills etc myself.....wonder why i stayed at home!!! they only paid it for me cos they know im a good saver and appreciate the value of money, and to be honest it made me work harder as it wasnt me paying for it if that makes sense. i do appreciate i was very lucky
