Sea Scout Uniform . . . How Much???

Well not sure if this is a rant or a request for help!!

DS has joined sea scouts, I have it on good authority that enrolment will take place in 3 weeks and he needs a uniform. They give me the website address and cost so far is:

Shirt - £20
Tie - £10.43
Woggle - £1
Hat - £41!!

I have had a look on ebay and 2 people are selling their kids old hat, so hopefully when I measure his head I might be able to get away with one of them, but no shirts, no ties etc. Im also not sure if he's going to need other stuff later, logo'd jumpers, trousers etc!

We are not rich people, any ideas where I could get this from a tad cheaper, even second hand, because if I cant get an ebay hat, im going to have to find £70 and i'll be honest, we cant afford it

(changing him to scouts etc isn't an option, there are no spaces, only got him in here because a friend was a helper, but he's not a leader so doesnt have the uniform, so has no ideas on cheaper ways!)

Does he need a dress uniform as well?

I've never heard of sea scouts, is that like junior sea cadets?

I think its like sea cadets, it for 10 - 13 year olds i think so maybe the prelude to sea cadets? No dress uniform I can see on the site, but theres shorts, trousers, waterproofs, 2 types of hat (im assuming ones a dress one for parades and ones a normal beret), jumpers, shirt, tie, woggle. :eek: is all i can say!

My dd(14) joined sea cadets a couple of months ago and both uniforms were provided for a £15 deposit. Sounds like sea scouts is something different. My neighbour said that everything for cadets is paid for/heavily subsidised by the armed forces.

I had to buy my hat and beret (beret could be bought 2nd hand) and the badges but the rest was loaned to us but we had to pay a deposit.

^^That is correct

Sea Scouts is a completely different organisation - if he joined the Sea Cadets his uniform would be free (not everywhere asks for a deposit)

OP - have you asked the leaders whether they perhaps have any second hand hats for sale?

Have had a look at a few sites as well and nowhere seems to be trying to go below that £41....yikes.

My daughter is an Air Cadet and all dress/working uniform is provided with the exception of Greens. Have to say I have never heard of sea scouts, only sea cadets.

Hi Louise, yes thats the one, and has a tally on the back. How did you find that :O One of the ones on ebay will fit him so will try and get that, if not i'll buy one from there. Thank you so much!

Oh tell him to join the real thing - sea cadets.

They get the everyday uniform and their No 1 uniform for free (its all ex navy stuff).

Won't regret a minute of it.

edit : have just had a look at the link above and I thought (having seen sea scouts at rememberance day parades) that they wore uniforms simiar to the traditional scouts? The link as per above is what sea cadets wear. Am willing to be told I'm wrong but are you sure its not the ea cadets he's joining?
