school lunch bags

My 5 year old son has a lunch bag for his packed lunch and it is very hard to clean it properly, the crumbs get stuck in the corners and under the edges of the lining iyswim. I can't get them out properly and am worried it will go mouldy.
How do you clean these bags properly? I put it in the washing machine on handwash and it still has bits stuck inside. I can't get him a plastic lunch box instead because he just can't open them.

I just put mine in the washing up water and sort of slosh it around a bit, it usually gets it out, if it doesn't I leave it to dry then the bits go hard and are easier to get out. Not very scientific I'm afraid.

Why don't you post this in the old style section as well, they might have better ideas.
  • What about a box with a lid which clips on? These are so much easier to open and close unlike the normal boxes, plus they have airtight seals.

My local pound stretcher has them for about £3 a set and they can be used for so many things, I use mine on a daily basis not including as a lunch box!
  • Try getting a flexible bend toothbrush in the corners!
  • I have one of these bags, and am putting the food inside the bag in containers that are easy to open (tupperware type).

For cleaning, how about getting a toothbrush in to it.

Apart from that I wouldn't worry too much, if you have scrubbed and scrubbed and can't get it off, it is unlikely to cause too much of a health hazard considering what they pick up in the play ground, etc.

  • toothbrush sounds like a good idea.

I tried putting a plastic box inside the bag but he never shuts them properly so all the bits go everywhere anyway. I'll try the ones with the clips though.

    thank you!

If its one of the fabric lunch boxes with the zip, just turn the whole this inside out and wash it that way - that's what I do and no more crumbs or smelly bits! :)

My boys used to abuse their lunch bags too - I even bought ones with their own plastic container made to measure - but the spilt youghurt got in the seams - yuck!
I now used those click to seal containers too - whack them in the dishwasher - job done! If they miss the daily dishwasher cycle, then a swish under the hot tap does the job.

  • you could put a plastic bag in there lunchbox and tell him/her to put tere rubbish in it and if possable tell them to tie it in a knot. as for the crums you could try turning it inside out then cleaning it.
  • I use insulated lunch boxes where the bits get stuck in the corners. I put the lunch boxes in the washing machine if they are really impossible to get clean in the washing up bowl. I have heard other people putting them in their dishwashers.
