I looked at cheap deals on www.contractdeals.com there are MANY free deals for 12months too.

I tend to stick to 12month deal as I don't need a fancy handset.

Use quidco for £40 or more cashback on the purchase.

If you don't need a fancy handset, try the 12m deal port your number to a PAYG (request this 30 days before contract end). If you are getting a new phone from the SAME provider, just move via PAYG SIM.

have a look at https://www.orange.co.uk for the tariff information then you could have a look around from the different stores to work out whats bestfor you.

the main tariff i seem to be selling at orange at the min is 500 mins and unlimited texts (capped at 3000 per month) for £35 per month. this is just a standard tariff but the other stores will only have access to the 500 mins and 500 texts for the same price.

i dunno if there are giveaways at other stores but orange dont really do that.

orange retail occasionally have £100 buyback which is £100 credit for trading in an old phone, it has just finished, but comes back at certain points, avoids cashback making life a bit easier
