How to get rid of bathroom mould?

I'm at the end of my tether. Our rented house has a mould problem in the bathroom, we have an extractor and leave the window open during and after having a shower and give everything a good scrub more than once a week yet we still get mould growing on the walls and titles, as well as some kind of pink stuff around the taps. I've got about 8 different cleaning products that we've tried but it keeps coming back.

How do we get rid of it all and stop it coming back?

I can't help but i have the same problem so will be interested in any hints and tips. In addition to OP I have an extra fan installed ( so I have 2 fans!) and a towel rail which is on if the heating is on , if not then it works on electric. I have regrouted/siliconed around the base and still the mould comes, seems to come from under the grout??

  • Glad it's not just me!

Spoke to our LA about it and they just say we need to always open the window.

Is there any way you can have the window open a crack ALL the time and open it fully when in the shower? This sort of mould is always down to condensation/lack of ventilation.

I know that in my bathroom it only really becomes a problem in the depths of winter when I sometimes shut the window.

You need some mould inhibitor spray - can't remember it's name - comes in a green plastic spray bottle - make sure that the room is well ventilated during and after use !!
Your silicon sealant may need replacing - make sure that you use microban stuff (eg http://www.dolphinsealants.co.uk/shop/everbuild-forever-white.html#a4everwhite)
  • I feel your pain!
We had a new bathroom fitted 2 years ago (had a black mould problem in the old bathroom) & now the mould is creeping back - behind the bath taps & in one corner of the bath. We also get the pink stuff around the taps.
I just saw this in the internet - no idea if it's any good or just a gimmick but TBH i'm getting to the stage where i'll try anything:

We also have an extractor fan & we always have the window open (even in winter) - not sure what else we can do :(

I can recommend 'Hagesan mould remover spray' - search ebay or Amazon - strong stuff but works well on black mould & the pink stuff. I don't think you can ever completely stop it, bathrooms being what they are. It's one of those boring facts of life for me that I have to re-silicone every year or so!

    We had the same problem.

It was dead easy to fix. We knocked down the cottage and are currently building new house.

    (Our mould was awful!!!!!)

    Seconded. Lakeland sell it.

  • I will try the Hagesan stuff and see how that goes.

Can't re-silicone as it is a rental, and have leave the window open for several hours a day but can't leave it open when we are out as it would make an easy route in for a burglar.
