Do agree that many people would expect to provide proof BUT it is entirely Barclay's responsibility to mention that proof is required AND specify what type of proof they require. If they did not then I think that it is unfair and is not Treating Customers Fairly (they must under FSA regulations and financial promotion guidelines). Ask if they would normally advise the client what proof is required and if yes, then ask for them to review the recorded conversation. If they didn't for you then they should pay the money.

All this may take time, which means you have probably gone past any cooling off period. I say it's worth persuing as you have little to lose.

AchieB thank you for understanding what I feel - They failed to mention it!

Then the paper work arrives and they asked for proof of my quote from Norwich, I sent them what I had which was just the quote price but then they tell me that will not do and will not give the £50 off. They want the full schedule showing exactly what was in the policy, I do not have these documents.
Proof of quote would be expected to have what is being covered. Especially as the statement of insurance would have the key sum assureds and level of cover listed along with the premium.

A quote, by definition, should include all the things they require and it is logical for them to request it. Otherwise you could just get a small coverage standard policy and use that to beat a full coverage policy.

If Barclays didnt ask for this, then they could be open to fraudulent claims.

It says this in the Barclays T&C:
This offer only applies if you are eligible for Barclays Home Insurance, where your existing home insurance policy and Barclays Home Insurance are like for like, i.e. covering the same risks and you purchase the policy during the period of the promotion. You need to have two years no claims on your existing home insurance and have maintained your policy with your current insurance provider for at least one year. You will also need to provide us with proof of your existing home insurance policy, cover and price. In some cases cover will not be available.

I dont think you have a leg to stand on from a complaint point of view. Throwing the documents away is not Barclays fault. You can always ask NU for a copy.

I understand what you're pointing out above regarding written T&C, but I bought over the phone and this was not mentioned.

No throwing the documents is not Barclay's fault and I never said it was, but what I did say was that as I wasn't then taking up NU's quote I thought I didn't need them.

I just feel it's been a bit of sharp practice by Barclays.

They cannot mention everything on the phone and that is why the T&C are sent in the post and you have cancellation period. They have a responsibility to mention the key facts and risk factors that may apply. I dont believe that saying exactly how and what type of proof is required would fall under that bit.

Could you imaging how long the phone call would be if they had to mention everything in the T&C? ;)

What specifically was said about the offer on the phone?

Requiring proof is a key fact and would have taken seconds to say.

What he said to me was as long as they can beat my quote i'd get £50 cash back which would take apprx 28 days to reach me.

I told him my quote and he said I'll take £1 off that so as we beat it and you get £50. if it wasn't for that I would have stayed with NU.

You're probaly right that they won't uphold my complaint but I'm still annoyed at what I feel is a bit of sharp practice. I probably will lose £50 plus their cheeky extra £8.99 which will hurt me but won't kill me - lesson learned.

I think I'll now move my Huge account elsewhere to punish them ............................................. if only:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Thanks for your views.

I have now spoken to Barclays and they say as long as I send a letter saying I no longer have the doduments they will still give the cash back.

The operator I spoke to said this has happened to other people who no longer have documents as proof as they were not informed that they were needed.

Surley it would be much easier to make sure their sales people made sure they mentioned it during the call.

    Yes, absolutely.

I never had any dispute with the fact that they should have made the offer clear on the phone, but also thought you shouldn't have binned the documents in the circumstances.

I don't understand the point of their offer, now, either - surely most of these promotions pay you £50 if they CAN'T beat your current insurer, rather than paying you £50 as well as beating your current insurer? Sounds daft to me.

A little confused myself now, I think they take something off their quote to make sure thy beat the one you already have to get the business.
