  • definately a fife thing lol

i make mine like soup as well but OH wont touch them.

they dont seem to be a very popular dish here in aberdeen - but if fife everyone seemed to eat them.

    Nic x
  • Superb!! so yummy and warm and tasty!!

They turned out really well, I had put too much stock in though, but I just strained some off and it was used as "gravy" for those who prefer their stovies more runny ..

I would definately do them in the slow cooker again. I dont think I would bother too much about the layering either as I mash and stir it all up at the end anyway..

thanks for all the hints and tips..

The stuff with corned beef is what we call corned beef hash. The stovies we have are usually made with leftover beef, with an oatcake sticking out of the top! I usually hate tomato ketchup with tatties or beef but it's a must have with stovies. :)

stovies aren't just with corned beef, they are also made with sausages or stewing steak

yes thats right, probably made with the remains of the sunday roast too, i always brown the onions then add the potatoes and stir round add a chicken cube and some water, leave to cook, then add the corn beef and give a good stir, best made with a drier potato

You can buy tins of stewing steak from Lidl's. If you have no leftovers, this is surprisingly good to make stovies with.
