  • yeah i found them too sweet too! have been buying asda own brand ones, am gonna try aldi's-thanks
  • My kids (17 & 19!!!) reckon that Aldi's baked beans are better than Heinz, will not however touch Lidl's. I was using Persil washing up liquid but have just tried Tesco's own (yes, in the clear bottles) and find it just as good!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

After reading through the replies, I think I will continue the experiment a bit longer !!

What should I switch next ?

I need to find something the same texture, colour etc ! Maybe Fabric conditioner ?

Then I'll move on to foodstuffs.

lidl ketchup (in glass bottles) is much much better than heinz - that's a good one to try.

See fabric conditioner - she should just use vinegar and zoflora :p but I bet she wouldn't try that! hehe. Also generally, certainly in washing powder brand name stuff tends to be better and usually can be got on offer - although I don't think it applies to conditioner as much.

Food though - there are so many easy ones - crisps - so many own brands are nicer than real things - not so easily swappable though due to labels.

Corn flakes are a good one - lidl cornflakes are actually much nicer than kelloggs - I previously would only eat kelloggs as supermarket cornflakes have been pretty nasty before, but now I love lidl ones - if you've got a cereal containers though rather than the box you can't tell the difference. Could work for all own brand cereal really.

Try window cleaner? or similar things? you can just swap the bottle.

  • I've been topping up Heinz tomato sauce for over year but the label got grubby so I thought I would get caught out. I emptied it and dishwashed it to remove the label and make it sparkle like new. I said it was 'not nice' to have the bottle on the table and that this was a compromise. I didn't think I'd get away with that explanation but I did!

I do the same with liquid soap. Decant it from a large cheap bottle of Lidl shampoo into a small bottle. This is partly because the small bottle fits on the shelf better but still it saves a lot too.

The Andrex loo roll bag is regularly topped up with Mr T's.
Love living in a village in the country side
  • My friends do consider me a food snob, but I'll try pretty much anything, I normally end up likeing the more expensive stuff as it doesn't have artifical sweeteners in, which I can taste a mile off and really don't like. This normally means I end up buying the supermarkets own brand stuff, but not the value stuff.

My BF didn't believe me and sneeked some in my tea once. I didn't get past the first sip.

Frozen veg would be a good one to try especially peas - I'd be amazed if could tell the difference between own brand and Birds Eye.

Fabric Conditioner - good one - that should be easy to do.
Cif? Toilet paper? Shampoo should be easy to get a match to.

Let us know how you get on! :)

Sod off, she's probably spending his hard earned money :p

I'll buy whatever seems the best value, look at the ingredients see how similar they sound. Some value things have less additives etc compared the the main brands!
  • I think im just wierd... im not a brand snob, I dont buy ketchup or baked beans... I make my own in large batches and freeze.

I do only buy Pura margerines though, but thats down to the fact im dairy allergic and Lidl dont do amargarine without some milk/buttermilk addetives in it.

Im quite happy with 'cheepie' coffee and tea, although I will treat myself once a year from a specialised coffee merchant who grinds them fresh in the next town. But even at £10 per kilo, it does last a loooong time :)

I do the same with curry sauces, sweet & sour sauces and ive even made bbq sauce once.

Oh and my kids eat the cerial like sweets whether its branded or unbranded, I just make sure its fortified. Saves me buying sweets too!
  • Most of it isn't being a brand snob though, it's just sticking to what you know you like. Do you buy your normal margerine, or do you save 20p and risk all your sandwiches tasting like crap for the next month? After all it's not worth saving the money if you're not going to enjoy the product. There's a difference between being a brand snob, and always buying a particular brand because you happen to like it, and haven't tried anything else. But if you assume that it's gonna be rubbish because it's a certain brand, or it's from a certain shop, or country, that you're a brand snob. I do wonder why people care about their brand of soap or floor cleaner though.

Oh and all you people switching the brands round, tell your other halves to get a grip.
