Just found out Daughter had Motor Insurance Cancelled - Advice needed.

Hi all

I just found out that my 26 year old daughter had her motor policy cancelled last year due to non payment.

She went through a relationship breakdown around 1 year ago with all that brings and ended up missing 2 payments and of course the policy was cancelled. (If only I had known..........)

She has now found her feet again & just started a great new job.

I'm helping her out by buying a little runaround but am unsure about what to do about the cancelled policy and how best to approach any new policy.

She is otherwise "low risk" for an insurance company - she had 3 or 4 years no claims and no accidents / claims.

Any advice appreciated.

  • With the details you give she's screwed, having insurance cancelled is a no no...I suggest trying a broker?
  • I'd approach it by telling her to sort it out herself and not to drive around uninsured again. Does that sound harsh; 26?

i wouldn't say it sounded harsh, just made up. The OP never mentioned that their daughter was driving uninsured.

I read it that she has been uninsured since the policy was cancelled.

Id also suggest you use a broker and explain to them just as you have to us. I read it that she hasnt had a car all that time? as you are buying her one? If so, I cant see it will be a huge problem once you give the facts.
  • i read it that she had her policy cancelled and her mum / dad are buying her a runaround. If they're buying her a run around then she's no car to be driving uninsured.

So, you don't even help your family out then.

Possible. However, what happened to the car that was owned when the insurance was cancelled?

    Cheers Guys

No she didnt drive uninsured - the car went ta-ta's along with the relationship so she hasnt been driving for the last year.

Seems that she stuck her head in the sand when the bills came in without telling anyone and without realising the consequences.

    Just called Swinton.

They dont seem to be too concerned about the cancellation of the Insurance given that it was through non payment.

They did say that if it had been cancelled because of another issue (non disclosure) then thats would be another matter.

They also think that there is a good chance that her no claims may still be valid - we need to check that with the insurer she defaulted with.

Not as bleak a picture that we were faced with last night when looking at quotes online!! The quote that they gave (worse case scenario with 0 no claims) came in at roughly at what I has hoped for.
