P.S. you need to find out her ring size properly if you're getting a vintage ring as these are more delicate and therefore difficult to re-size :)

  • victorian style, art deco are lovely, but really difficult to wear with a wedding ring and you need to consider that (may be she hasn't thought of that either) if the engagement is going to lead to marriage. :)

I used a Hula Hoop and we chose the ring together, I would never choose the ring myself, it's too personal, she has to wear it for ever.
The only difference may be if I had a family heirloom ring.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • I think you should choose the ring yourself. It's much more romantic and personal. If she really doesn't like it she can always exchange it.

my OH bought me sapphires and diamonds for my engagement ring - and I was too polite to tell him that I would have preferred a solitaire diamond or an emerald.

If she really didn't like it I think the reality would be as Meritaten says - she'd probably not say so.

For me, I'd rather do it together as a special day.

Or maybe the OP doesn't want her to know how much he's spent on it?

Absolutely, for us it was a very special time picking the ring, from the time we excitedly walked round all the shops, to the time we picked the one and I sat down with the shop keeper to haggle (pre MSE, but very MSE styley) :)

I'm one who also thinks the man should chose the ring and surprise her with it,aswell as the moment being extra special with the revealing,to me,seeing that your man knows you well enough to know what you'd love just makes it better.

Casually chat about a friends engagement or dilemma and you can pick up clues about the kind of thing she would like stone wise etc

Very important if you're considering buying a good quality diamond.

This website explains the '4 Cs' very well.
