Incoming BACS transfer problem

Hi,

I have been sent a BACS transfer by a local authority (council). I recieved a call from them today saying that when they made the transfer they had misspelled my name when conducting the transfer.

Now I have been waiting on this money for some time and it has dragged on and on and time is really an issue here.

I have been doing some reading and from what have seen, the name being spelt incorrectly should not really be an issue.

Can someone please advise me if I will still receive the payment into my account seeing as the sort code and account number are correct but the name has been spelled wrong?

I thank you in advance for your replies!

Yes, it will be fine as long as the sort code and account number are correct. They could have put your name as Mr M mouse and the payment would still come through!
  • Thanks for the reply.

The reason I am asking as I suspect they may be lying about having sent the payment.

It's good to know that the payment should still arrive if they have spelt the name wrong. I will know for sure by tonight if this is the case.

Then if the money has not arrived, armed with this information I will be questioning the guy in the payments department!
  • If it is a BACS payment you will be ok- if they have sent a cheque direct to your bank (a lot of councils do this) it might be an issue.
  • Definitely a BACS payment.

Done tuesday night's "run" as he told me yesterday. He told me that today too but called me to tell me that my name had been input erroneously and I will have to wait until the bank "pings it back" to them before they will make another payment.

    Definitely a BACS payment.

I suspect it may be a BACS Direct Credit, rather than a BACS Transfer.

If that's the case they probably missed the cut-off on Tuesday and it was put on a batch run for Friday. BACS Direct Credit operates as a simultaneous debit/credit, so you can expect your money to be there in the morning.
  • Ok thanks, I will post when I know the result for definite.

But we are all sure that the name doesn't make a difference?

I work in payroll and can also say however you spell the name will make no difference at all.

    I suspect this....

Council worker - Forgot to set the payment up..... Doesn't want to have to tell his supervisor so thinks by fobbing you off can just do it on next weeks run without anyone knowing the truth.... Of course he may just not know what he is talking about.

Ring tomorrow if it isn't there and ask to speak to his supervisor/manager as his response isn't acceptable, maybe even tell a little porky and tell them you spoke to your bank who told you the spelling makes no difference. Then demand they do a CHAPS payment though they will need to spell your name correct for that.

That's kind of along the lines of what I was thinking...

I just don't understand why he told me on Tuesday that the payment was being sent and that on Wednesday that it had indeed been sent, and then again today told me the same, only to call me back and tell me about the spelling issue.

The name wont make a difference if the payment is being sent via BACS its only CHAPS where an issue may be created.

  • You know what, I am still waiting for this to be sorted out.

On the remittance advice that they sent me it did indeed have the wrong name on it. They have reissued the payment and I have had another remittance advice with the correct name on it, exactly as it is on my bank card for the savings account that the BACS payment is destined for.

Thing is, I am getting very very frustrated as I still have not received the payment from them. The remittance advice states that the payment was sent from their Co-Op account on Wednesday 21st September at 14:18. It is now Monday 26th at 03:35 and it still isn't here.

I really am at my wits end here as I am relying on this money to pay bills and live with. Has anyone got any advice about this matter such as should the payment be here in my account already? Or will it indeed be in by the morning? Or not at all? Surely they can't get it wrong again after having solicitors on at them???
