To be fair, you could argue about this all day long.

"This law basically states that children should be at school learning during term time, unless there is a valid reason for missing school approved by the head;"

Is this where those *valid reasons* include: Training Days specified by the school.......Teacher's strikes.......*snow* days.......closing early due to the proposed new intake Parent's Open evening (i kid you not)......

During the past school year, my DD's secondary has had in excess of 11 days of the above.....and probably more i can't recall....(3 children/3 different schools).......And the Head wants to quibble about 6 days for a family holiday?

On each one of the occasions listed above , my Daughter was physically able to attend school.......Education can't cherry pick about which rules it wants to apply & when. It's either all or nothing.:o

Just hope your local school doesn't become an academy, this seems to have equated to even more days off for my children, as they can set their own

Quite. I've already accepted that earlier in the thread. But I would maintan that the 175 days a child has off in a year (only 190 at school) is plenty to do those things. Finances, maybe not so. I'd also argue that the "no harm" statement - it really is impossible to tell that. I'd also be horrified if all she misssed was "her times tables".

Anyway, I should be working!! :p

Blimey, teachers get 170 days a year off?????? Compared to my paltry 28 days I'm jealous. I may retrain :rotfl:

To be honest, I thought that the school had to put it as an unauthorised absence, am only now realising they had a choice!

And these "teachers" want us to have sympathy when they cut the pension money us mortals have to pay in tax to top up your pensions ....

    Why the quotation marks?

I actually tried really hard to read the whole thread, but I am sleepy...

    DS's HT is fab!

She knows about my problems (Meds & Depression +/-bipolar - and crazy sleeeeepy meds)

Meaning I often sleep in - DS was late a few times too many last year - she was soooo supportive! And still is!

So far this year we have been on time :D

I have a support worker, and am working on beating my deamons without them affecting DS

Ponies help - Yay for RDA!
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I try so hard not to read these threads but then the voyeurism takes over.

In fairness to OP, they were only asking about whether fines would be imposed BUT in my experience all such threads turn into teacher bashing. Most of the usual posts can be summed up in a few statements: Parent wants to take their child on holiday in term time. They know it's the wrong thing to do so they dress it up in various terms. Teachers and responsible parents remind them of this so they shoot the messenger.

I was amazed (well not really) at the discussion on 'free' schools a couple of weeks ago. EVERY parent they spoke to described the advantages in terms of childcare!! So don't worry, when you return from your holiday the school will still be there to take over childcare responsiblilities. It seems the education side matters little to many. Sadly, unless you'd like to take up Mr Gove's special offer and start a free school yourselves, they will be closed at weekends and school holidays.

I'm off on holiday myself this week, I can afford it on my gold plated pension!;)

Meant to add - HT authorised a long weekend off for us early this year - A last minute Haven booking would you know it!

We had a brill time, and it helped DS - he had a holiday! No it wasn't Egypt or Florida like his classmates - but it was A holiday - HIS summer holiday - and tho it was cheap and cheerful we enjoyed it!

Not everyone thinks it is wrong to take their child out of school per se! ;)

Also, I think you will find the thread was ok until a teacher started bashing parents. It's always the sanctimonious teachers who cannot see beyond their little domain who start hurling insults and it's actually quite scary to have such blinkered people teaching the next generation!

Thank goodness some parents are able to provide a more rounded view of life!!

There is something very wrong when a teacher feels they must have the pupils attend all the time so they can get them their GCSE results, don't you think? That isn't education - that's force feeding prescribed facts in order to gain prestige for oneself!
