Refuse to renew - Can they do that ?!!

I wouldn't agree but ultimately speak to each insurer in question.
Ultimately you'd be refused insurance if you are 20 and try to get a quote from Saga or try and insure your BMW with VW Insurance but I very much doubt everyone tells their insurer's they've used Confused.com and therefore have been refused insurance by those on the panel who's target market they dont fit to.0 -
This has intrigued me as I did consider Morethan last year but didn't insure with them last year. I had always thought that the Home Emergency cover was separate.
I just rang them as an enquiry as the b&c is due quite soon and was told that any claims for home emergency and boiler would register as a claim against your home insurance.
There are many companies that offer this type of cover as an "add- on" policy that doesn't affect your b&c policy.
To Bluewolfie - it appears that probably you have gone over the claims threshold for MoreThan but should still try to get other quotes. You won't be able to complete online but you can phone insurers direct if they have a competative quote online and explain the circumstances.0 -
I cannot see anything in the Home Emergency Cover policy booklet that limits the number of claims that you are allowed to make.
See : http://www.morethan.com/data/morethan/documents/home_emergency_cover_policy_wording.pdf
Therefore, I think you should raise a complaint using the MoreThan Complaints process which is defined in the Main Home insurance Policy Booklet. See : http://www.morethan.com/process/documents/haPolicyBooklet.pdf
The complaint could mention that their refusal to renew the home insurance policy will have a detrimental impact on your future ability to obtain insurance and that no restriction is shown in the policy booklet or on your schedule to limit the number of claims, so ask what are their reasons for refusing to insure you. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Add ons could be becoming a problem with insurance companies, this is the second thread in a couple of days.
Would you take breakdown insurance from your insurer rather than the AA, if you stood a chance of losing your ncd if you call them out?

I think the rule is to keep everything seperate, and keep all the companies at arms length from each other.0 -

Indeed, when I phone them up and asked for a reason, they just said its a business decision. Just because they have lost money on insuring me for the first year, they no longer wants my business.
Do you think I will have a case with the Financial Ombudsman Service ?0 -
You must follow the MoreThan complaints process before you contact the FOS.
You will need to wait to see what MoreThan say in writing, it may be better news than what they have said initially.
e.g.
They may say that their underwriting conditions have changed, so you no longer qualify for their policy, I believe that type of reason would not need to be mentioned when applying for insurance from other companies. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. No my understanding is that any business can decline you for business reasons (as long as it's not illegal discrimination like skin colour, religion etc.)
Sorry.0 -

Same news.. I called them up and they said the decision is final and gave me a load of crap about their business policy... I find it quite ridiculous.0 -

Sorry.
Yes, but insurance is not any business. This decision impacts all my future home insurances. Obviously, this business decision is made because they didn't manage to make money. If they bump up the premium, I would go somewhere else anyway, so might as well screw the customer, and refuse renewal so we can't get any elsewhere.0
