the red ring of death has a 3 yr warranty from purchase date , i assume you must be out of that ?0

You said you know what the fault is, have you tried googling it see if its easy to repair yourself. A lot of Xbox 360 faults can be fixed quite easily and cheaply yourself.0

i've no idea where my receipt for it is, but i think i bought it 4-5 years ago anyway0

I've got the same problem and looked into repairing it a while ago. It appears that the problem is to do with a latched overtemperature warning and there are a few ways of apparently resolving it yourself.
Time pressures meant that I haven't got rount to having a go at mine yet, but I am planning on doing so in the next week or two.
If successful, I'll post back here with links as to the method that worked for me.• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

Have you tried contacting microsoft? Mine went a while ago and I knew it was out of warranty and also could not find the receipt but tried their online form. They paid for it to be collected, fixed it within a week for free and returned with a free 3 months xbox live gold card!
Worth a try if not already done so.0 -
In a lot of cases it was due to poor soldering, according to law depending in where it was manufactured they could only have X% lead content in the solder, meaning it was weaker than other manufacturing areas (well, that's what i heard anyways), the connection was "terminated" and the 3-lights flashed up - which in it's own right was only ever intended as a signal something was wrong as opposed to a definitive answer as to what the problem was. Contact Microsoft, but i don't expect much, they will be able to tell with ease roughly how old the unit is & should (if memory is correct) be able to tell when the unit was sold, so will be able to determine it's warranty status.
There are numerous "fixes" available online the majority of which can be attempted by capable people (ofcourse only if your warranty is shot, as opening the machine would invalidate the warranty and render the console unshiftable - no second hand retailer will touch it after the fix), but if you're not entirely confident beware, if your console is borked anyways then there's precious little to lose, but it's not the easiest thing in the world to do!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
This is a well known problem that I and lots of people I know have had. It`s faulty hardware and it was big news when Microsoft admitted the problem and offered free repairs and extended guarantees.
As someone else said phone the service line and tell them you bought it 3 years ago and lost the receipt. If that fails buy the new black slim one. It`s better built, much quieter and has a bigger hard drive.0 -
