I've found that apart from the classics, i do want to purchase books for my kindle, Terry Pratchett for example is my favorite author and I can't wait to get stuck into finishing the discworld series.

I find it a good way to read new authors..
  • I buy many, many books - the thousands around my house are testament to this, so I don't feel bad getting free ones on my kindle, most are authors I have never read so if it turns out I like them I will happily buy their books.

Yes-- that's what I meant! Consider the free books as tasters, and if you like the authors please support them with your next book! (I'm an author too that's why I'm saying this!)

Hello all, just popping in to add my tuppenyworth. My no. 2 brother (who lives in a land far, far away and never, ever remembers my birthday, or the oh's or the kids ... or his other brothers or the parents!) sent me a Kindle for my birthday in August. To say I was bowled over was an understatement ;). I am a massive reader, my house has more books than we have shelves for, so I was not sure about an e-reader, in fact, I almost though it superfluous. I had the Kindle app on my ipad after all....

But then, in mid-October, I fell over and broke my foot. And had a LOT of time on my hands. So I picked up the ipad, downloaded a lot of free books to the Kindle and started reading. It is really great, I can take it to the hospital while I am waiting (and in fact had it with me whilst in A&E), sit in the car with it while the OH does the running around with the kids, lie in bed with my foot up .... and I don't have to drag piles of books round with me. I have discovered new authors, both classic and modern, and I have even bought a couple of books (gotta love that Amazon topup from Topcashback!). I am trying to compile a list of all the freebies I have read so far, and will update once I get it done. Love this thread!

  • Never heard of that cashback site before, have to look into it, I go for nectar points with Amazon I have to admit, but although I love real books, kindle does have a place in my life

Also, don't forget, if you buy a book (I haven't done so yet as I have about 100 free ones so far!!), you can share it with another Kindle user for free as long as you know their kindle's name!
    I think that is great!

Oooh I didn't know that, thanks! Now to track down someone with the takeaway secret :D

The new all singing all dancing kindle is out in US next month with touch screen instead of a keyboard. The idea behind a kindle is to be small and lightweight and having a pull out keyboard would be going backword when touch screens are the way forward with most technology.

    http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Fire-Color/dp/B0051VV!!!

I've got a kindle touch, ordered it from the states and had it shipped to a friend who sent it on to me (amazon.com wouldn't ship outside the US) and I ordered my mum a regular kindle at the same time. Hers came weeks ago. Neither of us were sure about them, both loving the feel and smell of books but she loves hers, so easy to use.
I've had mine a week and I think I prefer the regular kindle to the touch version. Its a two handed operation to hold the kindle and turn the page unless you have large hands :D and its not something I'd feel comfortable using to read in the bath.

All of that said, I do like it, its so light and less bulky than a book to keep in my handbag - and I always have something to read. Have found loads of fab free and low price books and have bought authors i wouldn't normally as a result of the freebies.

Mum and I have kept our kindles linked to the same amazon account so that we can share all the books we buy/download.....we didn't know that you can send books to other kindles as mentioned up there ^^^^ :D

Ooh, I didn't know that either. How do I share a book with another user? Could someone point me in the right direction of these instructions.

    Many thanks.

When on your home page (which lists all your books)...

Scroll down until you find your Kindle User Guide.

Page down until you see "Loaning Kindle books" and down arrow to select and go to that section.

    Follow the clues :)

In fact it sends you off to https://www.kindle.com.support for detailed instructions.
