Viewing history on work computer

If they use keyloggers (as far as im aware they are illegal to use without permission but unsure about with work computers) to see each key you type then they would be able to see what site you are on, your passwords and even what you type in word documents.
If they view through the internet connection, they shouldnt be able to see your banking details as majority of banking site (if not all) use secure connection (https) which basically scrambles the information to the destination so cannot (generally) be viewed by a party viewing the connection. Make sure when you go to the site it starts with https instead of http.
If they do use a keylogger (can be software or a device connected to the keyboard connection to the pc) I assume they would do so legally and if they are, you cant do anything about it as it is their machine and internet.
TBH I dont know if they have to legally inform you if they do monitor your computer usage. I would assume they would have to under the freedom of information act otherwise they could accidentally leak your information and deny it and you wouldnt know how your account got hacked.0 -
I never log into any website on a computer that isn't mine, unless I don't mind losing the account. You don't know what is or isn't being monitored + logged.0

why not just take your own lappy in to work with you?
I'm surprised and dissapointed that no one (until now) has acknowledged your quite right simple solution, when a company is ready to do a staff trawl then the internet abuse is an easy way to do it, the cost of a low cost netbook/laptop or using the mobile phone plus some kind of data connection is a very low cost way for peace of mind for the OP without having to worry about company internet access.0 -

I realise that my work will most likely be able to see the sites I view on my work pc, however I was wondering if they are able to view sites that I need a password to log onto, for example can they see my bank details if I log onto internet banking while at work? would they be able to pick up my bank log on details and the same for my private hotmail email account - would they know the password for that and also would they see emails I've sent/recieved from my personal hotmail account?
I always browse on in private browsing (and delete browsing history on exit & clear cookies) but i am aware that this prob won't stop them from seeing what i have viewed - which i haven't got a problem with, it's just my personal accounts that need passwords that I am concerned about. I don't like the thought of them being able to access or view my bank account and personal email account.
Thanks
Most banks have fairly good security in place, such as fobs that give random codes each time you enter when you log in and often use drop down menus to avoid being able to have key strokes identified etc and are heavily encrypted. If it bothers you that much then change the passwords to your personal things like hotmail and banking etc and then don't use them at work. Using any personal application on a 'shared' computer is never a great idea. I certainly wouldn't be doing online banking at work or on a public computer.Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing'0 -
Can they, is it possible - Yes
Do they have to inform you - Yes (but only that they are monitoring you, they don't have to tell you how.... to my knowledge anyway)
Should you do it - Any details you are happy for them to potentially see
Is it secure - Depends, I'm with HSBC and you get a calc, so even if they have your IB and Security Code it's useless without the calc
Odds of it causing an issue - Zero, as long as your usage is limited and you aren't doing anything dodgy like viewing XXX or illegal sites.
Try to remember, the company itself doesn't have much of an issue with you using their resources. It's usually expected that some people will want to use it. Personally I don't care less if I had internet access or don't. Although it's useful if you do for when researching things and checking BBC News/Weather etc. However, the company is more interested in their image.
So if your surfing the BBC website whilst looking up computer espionage that can be traced back to your company. Then hell yes they're going to be peeved.
If your surfing BBC whilst checking your hotmail and sending emails to friends. That's doubtfully going to raise any concerns.
Always remember though, when you work for a company nothing is confidential and you agree to that when signing contracts. That is always why it is best to keep work / personal life seperateOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

If you have a computer at home that is on, you can also use free software like logmein.com to log into your home computer from work and then surf from there. LogMeIn may be blocked of course.
I doubt very much that they keylog.
I used to work for a company that provided software to call centers that recorded both voice and screen. It was amazing, you could watch call center people put customers on hold whilst their eBay auction was about to end so they could put a final bid in at the right time.0
