Would we be able to get a joint account?

Options
Hi,

I'm just wondering whether it would be possible for my partner and I to get a joint account {as we are soon moving in together}. I have a terrible credit report and have a feeling this will prevent us from getting one.

Any advice/comments welcome.

Thanks

  • I don't see why not, you just might not be able to get an overdraft.

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time
  • Thank you for your very speedy response!

I once applied with an ex to get a joint account and they refused straight away, even though we didn't want an overdraft. That is why I'm slightly hesitant :-/

    Thanks again xxx

Why the desperation for a joint account?

Bear in mind if your credit rating is poor opening a joint account would affect your partner's.
  • If you have bad credit a bank may well decline you for a joint account.
I agree with chambta why go for a joint account?

If you have a poor credit report it may be fairer on your partner to avoid a normal joint account.

If you are looking for a joint account to pay bills etc, Yorkshire Building Society and a few others offer a savings account that can be held jointly, comes with a cash card, and can be used to set up direct debits and standing orders just like a bank account. No overdraft or cheque book facilities though.

However, as it is a savings account there are no credit checks involved and you will not be linked financially in terms of your credit reports.

If it's for 'bills' why not just nominate the more organised to open a separate account for this purpose?

I'm sure you wouldn't want to affect his credit rating negatively anyway.

Or as above, open a savings account that be used as if it was a current account.
  • Thank you all very much for you quick responses,

Yes you're absolutely right I wouldn't want my poor credit to affect my BF - I had no idea this would happen. There isn't a "rush" to open a joint account either, it was merely a question. My BF suggested it because I work less than him and he earns more per hour {I have a daughter so can only work part time} so my BF wanted to put both out wages together ine 1 account so we could pay the bills out of it and then anything left we could split equally, so 1 of us wouldn't have more than the other etc.

I like the idea of the Yorkshire building society idea, as that is all it would be used for, we don't want an overdraft or anything. I don't suppose anyone else has any other suggestions?

    Thanks again xxx
