I have received a fine from UKPC

I recently parked in a retail outlet which has 2 hours free parking (you still need to display a ticket whichI did). I returned to the car 5 minutes late due to my daughter being sick. There was a ticket on the car for £50. I spoke to the issuer who apologised and said there was nothing he could do but I could appeal. I did this and have now received a letter stating the parking charge was correctly issued as all vehicles must display a valid permit to park. It now advises I must settle the charge at the full rate of £90.00.
I appreciate I was late back to the car and have now read these forums and am unsure whether I should have entered any correspondance or whether as I was late that I do need to pay! HELP please!

Hi petunia12 - DO NOT PAY - IT'S NOT A FINE!! Now you've entered into correspondence, be prepared to receive more - probably much more - but do not pay. If you read through this sticky

it'll give you some idea of what to expect. Having been in this position (well, Mum actually) and receiving advice from the good folks on this forum (cheers Crabman, Coupon-mad etc etc!) we ignored, ignored & ignored. It's a little nerve racking at times, but in the end, they'll give up and go away!
  • Thanks for your advice - so even though I am not the registered owner but was the driver at the time and I was late by a few minutes, you think I should still ignore???

Ditto! Absolutely ignore. They may well try the registered keeper - just make sure that they know to ignore it aswell! Be prepared to do the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and going "lah lah lah lah......"!

You have not been given a parking ticket or a fine:
From a legal prospective what you have been given is an "invitation to pay a private invoice".
You are legally within your rights to reject the invitation and keep your money:
What will happen is they will buy your private data from DVLA and send a series of menacing letters threatening to take you to court and then more letters from fake debt collectors and fake solicitors again all threatening to take you to court.
They will not take you to court as legally they have no power to fine you or charge you a penalty.
In short it is a scam of impersonation of officialdom and empty threats.
    HOW TO DEAL:
IGNORE everything, ignore all letters, ignore all fake solicitors letters and ignore all fake debt collectors.
They will get fed up and move on to another victim.
IGNORE Means exactly that IGNORE, you do not appeal, there is no appeal it is part of the scam, you do not bite back, do not write or do anything to correspond and they will go away, if they call your telephone, do not confirm any information place the handset down and leave it of the hook for ten minutes .
BE WARNED evidence on these and other forums clearly describes how people who do pay these hoping they go away receive further demands for more money, often several hundreds of pounds.

whilst I'd normally go for the ignore option too I suspect that in this case the unsuccessful appeal letter will have given the parking company all the evidence they need to win a small claim at court if they choose to launch a case.

You could try ignoring but if you get a "letter before action" then give serious consideration to paying because if you do lose in court then it will cost you more

Sorry disagree, the defence does not change, this is an unlawful penalty and not an actual account of losses, that is £0.

I was wondering this too, the OP has effectively admitted to overstaying.

    So what?

He didn't cause any damage to the private property or the landowner, he don't have to pay this ridiculous amount. Please, OP, don't pay this.
