Are you talking about ATV 1 or ATV 2? There is a considerable difference on how the two operate

I am using an aTV with iTunes Beta version for iOS Devolopers at the moment. Basically I copy DVDs using handbrake drag and drop into iTunes and with homesharing enabled I can watch the films on there. The other way to do it is to watch the DVD in iTunes using your superdrive and then use the airplay button and select aTV.

Has worked fine for the past 2 months without a single issue. Also if you lose your internet connection temp and you have already enabled home haring on both the aTV and iTunes this will continue to work as well - Just off topic slightly.

The other option if you wanted to do it slightly differently if you have a Xbox 360 / PS3 you can buy a NAS drive with uPnP capabilities and watch films though those 2 as well - However I found the aTV option easiest as all my films are on an External HDD plugged into my iMac. You cannot use a NAS drive with aTV unless you jailbreak it and use a variety of 3rd Party software. Which will probably cost you more money and not actually be worth your while.

If I had my way again - I would probably go for a Boxee box instead tbh......

I haven't bought one yet but it would be an ATV2.
