New rental - previous tenants virgin media broadband

Hi all,
Just moved in to a new house which 4 of us our renting with a joint tenancy agreement (student digs).
The previous tenants left their virgin media router in, and the broadband is still on. What is the situation with us using it, do we become liable or is it still the previous tenants responsibility to cancel?
For what it's worth we will be going with virgin as it's the cheapest option since we won't bother with a landline, but don't really want to pay when we can just use theirs.

Don't be cheap, register a new line.
It will only come back and bite you otherwise.
There's a good chance that they'll cancel it in a month or so when they see the direct debit going out, and you'll be unable to use the web until you sort it out then.I am an IFA, but nothing I say on this forum constitutes financial advice. And they'll get a nice big bill for the non-return of the equipment. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Cautioned or Prosecuted for theft of service, that'd look good on a future work record, would'nt it..0 -

i love stupid comments....
Prosecuted ? what planet are u on!
As someone said already, just use it for now, as you will find that it will cease at some point. I used free cable (going back 8 years mind) for around 14 months, had my own 3com sharkfin modem back then, moved into a house that had cable socket, plugged my modem in, picked up IP, happy free days for next 14 months...
I've heard that when a person moves out and cancels there liability for that line, it stays live for anywhere between 2 weeks to 3 months
So be a moneysaving expert, and use free broadband while you can.0 -

As wonderfully well-informed as this advice is, I'd recommend reading through the Digital Economy Bill and looking at some court rulings in cases where people are prosecuted for unauthorised use of neighbours' wifi, etc.
What you're essentially saying is, you didn't get caught for unauthorised use of somebody elses subscription, therefore everybody should do it if the chance comes.
To paraphrase:
"Six years ago I was in a jewelry shop, I noticed that the lady at the counter had brought out a lovely watch that I'd been intending to buy for my wife. She left it on the counter and wandered into the back of the shop, so I thought "here's a great moneysaving opportunity!" and pocketed it. I never got caught so I think everybody should moneysave in this manner"I am an IFA, but nothing I say on this forum constitutes financial advice. I take it you work for VM then?.... I have & have seen people prosecuted for theft of service, cautioned by the police for selling stolen cable equipment & obtaining services thru said equipment since I started working for NTL/VM in 1998.The have even been some people given jail time for it as well.
So I suggest you keep your flippant comments to yourself0 -
If your gonna go with virgin anyway, just phone and tell them that their equipment is there and could they collect it.
It may seem like free internet use, but the other way to look at it is, when Virgin find out and start sending bills requests for payments etc is the money you saved for free access worth the cost of hassle etc you now face trying not to pay for it.
Also if you connect and start using it, even though there no written contract between you and virgin, there is one through useage and therefore you can be charged.
The final point i would make if you intend to save money by going to Virgin, do you really want to risk them not starting up a new account (once the old one is deactivated) because there are outstanding issues at that address or with yourselves, forcing you to start a contract with a more expensive company and ultimately costing you more.0 -
I'd sign up just to stop there being any downtime, chances are the tenants before still have a few months left on there contract so waiting until it expires0
