Try to take in a show if you can, there are plenty of good shows at the mo in Manchester (check ticketmaster or aloud)
Also bring a brolly - it always rains here ;)

Your tongue is probably firmly in cheek, & I know people wouldn't like the facts to get in the way of a good myth, BUT many places get more rain than Manchester, e.g. Bristol (according to the Met. Office, but, hey, what do they know!); however nobody perpetuates the facts in the way they perpetuate the myth!

For info: The UK city with the highest annual rainfall is Swansea.

It's ages since I've been to Manchester, & I've no axe to grind - it sounds like arthurp8 IS in the city - perhaps you should get out more & try the SW of England & Wales; it's all relative!

Other than the museums you can

    1. Go to the Trafford Centre for shopping if you are nearby doing the United tour.
    2. Check out the Printworks - it has restaurants such as Hard Rock Cafe, Tiger Tiger - its opposite Urbis (near Victoria Train Station).
    3. Depending on your taste - if you like retro/rock/punk/indie, there is the Northern Quarter - there are bars down Oldham Street where you can see a local band for £4-5 entry and there is Afflecks Palace for shopping.
    4. If your wife likes Corrie, Liz Dawn (Vera Duckworth) has her own pub not to far from Granada Studios - its called The Old Grapes, off Quay Street (I think she still owns it). Its has pictures of people who she has met/stars from the show on the walls - you may be lucky to see someone in there - the United team was in there for their xmas drinks it said in the news of the world...
    5. The Manchester Arndale is good for shopping now it has been done up it looks lovely.
    6. For sight seeing, you can check out the Town Hall in Albert Square and the Mancheter Library which is round the corner....if you like that sort of stuff (?), you dont appreciate it when you see it every morning.

If your missus is into shopping, she will love the Trafford Centre, its not in the city centre mind you, but there is a frequent Bus service (number 250) from city centre Piccadily Gardens.
If you are driving it is at Junction 10 M60.

Also there is a Cinema and lots of Themed cafes and Bars

    cheers

Depending on how much time you have left, you could go and see Concorde.

Manchester Airport has an Aviation viewing park, where Concorde is permanently on view with some other aircraft.
You are very close to the runway and taxiways.

There is a picnic area and a cafe, ice cream vans etc.

Its worth a visit. The last time I went it was £3.00 entry I think.

Here are a few links for you of places that I know of in Manchester/Salford that I have visited.

The Museum of Science and Industry (this could be a full day out it's huge), so your a fan of Corrie, well I think its in the Xperiment section look out for signs about Photograph Copyright, look out of the window and you see part of the Corrie set, not much, just the back gardens and the back of the factory and I think 2/3 houses of the terrace.

  • I really wouldn't bother with the Trafford Centre. Now that the Arndale Centre's refurbishment is complete, it easily rivals it.

    For restaurants/bars I would recommend:

Cafe Istanbul on Bridge Street - it is a Turkish/Middle Eastern restaurant that has been there for years and is absolutely gorgeous. Between 5 and 7 they do a pre-theatre menu -2 courses plus coffee for around £11 - the main courses alone are £11 plus so it is a really good deal.

Grinch on Chapel Walks (just off Cross Street) - between 5 and 7 every day all their pizza are £5 and they do drinks offers as well. All the other food is good, especially the special fried chicken.

Golden Rice Bowl - if you like Chinese food and want something quick and cheap they do an offer between 12 and 5 I think - £6 for 2 courses, usually the starter is chicken and sweetcorn soup or hot and sour but it is good value.

Obsidian Bar on Princess Street (next to Arora Hotel) is a really flash bar and is doing offers on all their drinks most nights I think.

If you really want to impress her you'll have to take her to the new Hilton Sky Bar, Cloud 23. It's 23 floors up and the views across Manchester are amazing. It's not really for moneysavers as the drinks are really pricey eg. £6 for cheapest small glass of wine, £3.75 for cheapest bottle of beer but a visit is a MUST. I've heard there are queues so you might want to book to get the best window seats (it's all glass). It only opens at 5 pm. I've been once and can't wait to go back.

There is also a cafe bar in Selfridges which looks out over Exchange Square and the big wheel. I've never been, only read about it in the local paper on Friday but again, the views will be amazing.
