My iPod nano (5th gen if it makes any diff) has some but not all of my iTunes library on it. Is there a quick and easy way to transfer the whole library to it, with an option not to duplicate what's already been transferred please?
I've tried and can't see how other than dropping and dragging individually.
Please help as I need to do it prior to a long car trip in 2 days time. Many thanks.
Btw is the nano's battery supposed to go flat when it's off? I don't use it that much (car trips, train trips mostly) and it is always flat when I turn it on when it's been off for a couple of weeks. This doesn't happen to a shuffle!

If i recall correctly, when you connect your Ipod to your computer and open up Itunes, you can click on the Ipod itself and it should have an option to manually sync your ipod. If you have this option unticked it should sync automatically with your entire library, with no duplicates. That's how i used to do it anyway.
If this doesn't work, the only way i can think of is to just highlight everything on the ipod already and remove it. Then highlight your library and copy it all back on.0 -
will have a go. Be back here if it doesn't work!
any idea on the flat battery thing as well? thanks!0 -
It almost sounds as though the Ipod isn't turning off properly and so is draining the battery. Faulty perhaps?
Maybe nipping into the Apple store would be an idea. Sometimes i hear if you leave things on charge for hours on end it can mess up the battery. Have you done this?0 -
If you connect the iPod to the PC with iTunes, and you haven't previously switched it to manual sync, iTunes will attempt to copy the whole library to the iPod.
If there are tunes on the iPod which aren't in the library, these will be erased from the iPod. iTunes is designed to Sync one way, to make the content of the iPod correspond to the content of the library.0 -
If I was you, especially if I was having the battery problem I would try restoring the firmware before doing the following....
Firstly, connect your iPod and open iTunes. Click on your iPod on the left hand side halfway down.
Then under Summary make sure you have 'sync only checked songs and videos' ticked under 'Options'. I've an iPhone but it's the same principal. (And before anyone asks, I'm running iOS5 hence the sync over WiFi option.) If you want to restore the software of the iPod click the restore button under 'Version'. Then start from step 1 again once it's all done.
Then under music tick the following two options.
And finally make sure all your songs have a tick beside them and then sync your iPod.0 -

Yes, but the OP won't get the chance to do that until after the automatic Sync completes. Connect the iPod, and if auto Sync is currently selected, iTunes doesn't give you the chance to do anything until after the Sync is completed.0 -

If auto sync is enabled then she can follow my instructions after it's finished syncing.0 -

It's out of warranty but think I'll do that when I get back. I imagine they can run a test on the battery. Sounds as if it's not supposed to drain while the ipod is off? (as with my old shuttle that's as reliable as rain in Ireland!).
It's now got my whole library on it. I didn't know it deleted tracks on the ipod that are not in the library but am not surprised that it does thatI don't mind having it all on my iPod at the moment; will wait until I get back to change anything. It did say when I last synced that all my software is up to date.
thanks for the detailed help HappyChappy. Much appreciated.0 -
Did the manual syncing work for you? When you plug it in next you can just to what HappyChap has said and untick any songs you don't want on it, and it'll automatically remove them when it automatically syncs
The battery definitely isn't supposed to drain when it's turned off. Mine doesn't - I use mine quite often but only charge it once a week or so. Just make sure you don't leave it on charge for too longAnd yeah, nip to the apple store at some point when you're home.
Enjoy your trip0 -

Even if the software is up to date you won't do it any harm restoring it. I purchased the latest iPod shuffle for a present for my mum and it was a bit messed up straight out of the box, restored it and it's working perfectly.
If you delete any songs from iTunes on your computer then the next time you sync your iPod iTunes will remove them from the iPod too.0
