Just had son on the phone, he's fed up of the poor wireless capability of his Sky supplied router and went off and bought a new Netgear.
He's struggling to set it up and after having a quick shufty on the net in an effort to help him, I see people posting about how you are only supposed to use the Sky router and no other. Sky also wont give you log in details.
Is this correct?!

Yes you can, and people do. But if you read yr terms and conditions you shouldn't.
Having said that there is lots on google about it and how to get your user name and password out of the existing box. The problem with Sky is that use the very old DG834 router (maybe they updated it recently), but its out of the ark and the wireless is poor - if you have one of these try getting a free upgrade - I'm sure you could twist their arm.
Good lick (the french would say!).......0 -

yes, although they might wish u to use their own router there is nothing technically that prevents u from using another brand/model. The log-in details usually are provided on initial installation -- although thb all u probably need is the username/password....sometimes u also require the dns servers (they can be found in the router config page ).BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Sky can't give you the login details for your modem, they are coded into the modems firmware and not accessible.
Sky stopped supplying the Netgear DG834 (White Router) a couple of years back.
Most people now have the Sagem (Black Router).
I'd suggest going to https://www.skyuser.co.uk for how to info. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I have my sky router log in....
I found it quite easy to find, too.
I presume we are talking about the page where you can log in and open/close ports, set MAC and IP addresses, reboot the rooter, etc?
Edit: I'm pretty sure it's standard, so mine is probably the same as his.0 -

User admin, password sky
Handy for getting your router line statistics, and changing wireless parameters.
For the OPs lad with their wireless problems I'd suggest changing the wireless channel.
Download and run inSSIDer find a free channel and use that one to minimise interference. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

This works very well.... I do recall reading that Sky have been known to give out the username and password for the ADSL log on but it's highly unlikely (probably given out in error)
I've had Sky and found the netgear DG934 Sky branded router (really a DG834) had equal wifi performance and range as a Belkin that had external antennas (the netgear/Sky did not) although saying that, Belkin aren't that great!
I still use an ex Sky modem with Plusnet once I reflashed it to become a standard DG834g without the Sky bits.
Often wifi can be improved by changing the channel it uses... if neighbours all have wifi then they may clash with yours and so changing the channels can help.... use inSSIDer software to display all the local wifi and note the channels least used and lowest signal strength, then set your modem router to that channel.
Also moving the modem router away from dect cordless phones can help.....
