With thanks to Martini for the links - reading further - as one does - it gets worse and worse. here's a quote from elsewhere on the same site:
"Ofcom has already started trying to deny that there will be any change on DAB due to the adoption of the new AAC+ audio codec. The reality is that what Ofcom is saying is just spin, and we will see stations using AAC+, probably in as short as 2 - 3 years' time.
The reason they're denying that anything will happen is simply that the broadcasters are terrified that if the public finds out that all DAB receivers on sale will not be able to receive the new stations that will launch in 2 - 3 years' time then that will hit DAB sales and consumer confidence in DAB."

i am winding my mother in law up over this - she has had a DAB radio for over a year and its still in the box! - reason is she is waiting for her new kitchen. !!!!!!!
Anyway, i read the existing format will be around for many years. It is still being tested - it will enable 4 times as many channels to be broadcast over the same channels. Quality will be better, 1st radios are coming out soon0 -
I wouldn't rely on a USB port meaning that it will be upgraded to AAC+ unless it actually specifically says so. After all, if the manufacturer hasn't promised it, why bother, when you can make everyone buy a new one instead...0

The tech view is that DAB is the new a.m. And we know how good THAT was.Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission. Thank you.0 -
Well I have a Pure Bug, have had for 2 years - sound is streets and streets ahead of FM. Even if it is obsolete in a few years, I'll have had my money's worth, and I paid a lot more than the radio that started this thread off!
Sometimes you've just got to live for the moment a bit more!
Who's to say we'll still be here by the time DAB is obsolete!!! ;-).0
