I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, with a 2Ghz Intel i7 with 4GB RAM and it takes about 30mins to do a DVD film. I also have an SSD hard drive and send the ripped movie to my NAS drive over my network, whilst encoding so that will slow things down a little.
That has to be the geekiest post I have written in ages
30 minutes? what settings do you use? The settings I use means Handbrake takes the same to rip as it does to watch the DVD. 3 hours for one I did yesterday! :eek:0 -
These are the settings someone told me to use when I first asked about this software on another forum.
The only thing I change is to 'Target Size' and set it at 1700 as I was told this would give me the same quality file as if I'd downloaded it from iTunes.0 -
For some reason if I change 'Video Codec' from H.264 (x264) to the other option the files won't play on my iPad/iPhone. I don't think that the other option was any quicker either.
I still need suggestions of software to give the volume a boost?0 -

You can actually increase the volume of the video through iTunes. Select all your videos, go to Get Info, then the Options tab and you will see a volume adjustment (you can double it).
Hope this helps.
By the way, I'm using WinX Platinum to recode my videos direct from my DVDs. Using Win7 on an iMac and it takes about 10 mins for an hour of video, video size 640x360 with pretty good quality. You can get a free version for the Mac but it will only recode from a video file (not DVD), take a look here: http://www.macxdvd.com/mac-video-converter-free/0 -

On the top right of the handbrake window there should be an icon that says "toggle presets" and out the right hand side of the window should appear, then you can select which format you want to rip in. try the ipod touch setting and see how that looks on your ipad...0 -

Thanks, I selected iPad this time but it's still taking the same length of time to rip as it would to watch the movie. I'll try iPod Touch next time.
Does this look right? NTSC? I thought that that was the American video system?0 -
See if you can click the arrow to the right of NTSC and choose 25 FPS and PAL
Not sure if you then need the tick in peak framerate0 -
I cancelled that last rip as the estimated time shot up to 2.5 hours.
I'm now doing this one...0 -
the only setting i ever change is on the presets. on my 2 year old 13 inch aluminium macbook, the process is done in half the time of the program...0
