OP, how did the "overpayment" come about? did you knowingly give them false information or not update your circumstances?
I wouldn't be laughing if I were you, it's not going to go away and they don't have to agree to whatever terms you propose.
If you've knowingly deceived them you may even be charged with fraud, will you be making a joke of it then?
Benefit fraud is a serious offence and I don't think this board is the right place to be making jokes about it...

I'm laughing at the fact they want it by 15/10.

Neither, it's a long long story that I'd really rather not go into but I've not done anything wrong, haven't been 'caught' and I won't be getting charged with fraud, I've already discussed that with them thanks.

I don't expect it to go away, I know I'll have to repay it.

Thanks for your 'support' though :rotfl:

The reason i didnt tell the DWP about him leaving college is i wasnt sure at all what he intended doing, as he didnt, I just hoped every week he would return.

If i had known he would return now i wouldnt have told them anything.
    they are so inept.

we have been messed about terribly, if i did my job like they do theirs, i would be sacked!
some of the DWP staff dont even know how to converse politely over the phone.

I'm sorry - how is it the system's fault? You waited 32 weeks for him to return before informing tax credits he was no longer at college so that's 32 weeks you were getting payment to which you were not entitled. You could have informed them he left at the time and then, if he had returned to college, you could have rung them and told them he'd gone back, thereby having your claim reinstated. Yes, you would have probably had to wait a week or two for the new award but you would have had it backdated and you certainly wouldn't have been facing an overpayment. I just don't understand your logic of it being the system's fault. The terms of receiving tax credits are very clear - your only obligation to receiving this benefit is that you renew your claim once a year and in between inform them of any changes right away otherwise you may face an overpayment. Oh, and I do have children by the way but, no, not a teenager quite yet ;)

Yes you have. You did not notify them of a change which you were legally required to.
    haven't been 'caught'

    Yet you owe thousands....

your whole attitude is pretty terrible, you've obviously done something to incur an overpayment of that scale and your not contesting you owe it. You deserve all you get I'm afraid.
You don't want to "go into it" because I sense you know this already...

Under this govt They have no interest in helping people out at all. All they want to do is stop or cut your money any way they can They will LIE through there teeth just to claw back a few pence...!!!!!
    4.5K is hardly pennies!
I made a mistake once, believeing people on the internet were my virtual friends. It won't be a mistake that I make again!
  • Offer them £60 pm, generally HMRC are actually very good at sorting out a decent payment plan. Whether it takes 1 year or 10 years to repay.

Blimey. Does everyone here automatically assume everyone else is on the fiddle? What a jaded view of life, I'd hate to live like that.

Earnings were estimated, childcare costs were helped with and my relationship recently broke down so I've gone from being in a two parent family with a varied yet reasonable income to being on my own and earning peanuts. I notified TCs of this back in December, gave them all the required figures in April and they have now finally let me know what I owe.

On hold for the third day running to try and arrange to pay it back, something which I've never tried to duck away from but I can't give them what I don't have. My amusement comes from the fact that they know full well I earn next to nothing as they've had my earnings and they still ask for 4.5k in just over a month. I barely make that in 6 months and that's before tax and ni, never mind rent, council tax and all those other pesky essentials.

You do have the re-payment number, as it's different from the tax credit helpline?

if your partner was earning a reasonable wage i don't see how you could incur that much of an overpayment as you probably would have got very little tax credits between you, and if you earn next to nothing now, you'd be entitled to far more in tax credits, I can't get what your saying to add up. Also if you knew since December you were being paid too much, why wern't you putting some of it away so your repayment wasn't so huge?!?
