Hi Bangton, thanks for your reply.
I was told that I would not be allowed to stay on an unlimited data allowance if I upgraded the handset, James also said that I would be throttled and always have been at 500mb ( I have never noticed this) and that O2 wouldn't have made me aware of it but he is now because he wants to look after me. I have always been allowed to upgrade my handset in the past whilst extending my contract for an additional period, now it seems upgrading has disappeared and all I am offered os the opportunity to start a new contract whilst keeping my number.
Whenever you upgrade you take on a new contract on the terms in force at the time you upgrade.
O2 do not offer unlimited data at the moment so if you upgrade you move to a capped contract.
Your choice, take a subsidised new phone on contract and lose the unlimited internet, or keep the current contract running to keep the unlimited data and buy a phone sim free. However you'll be overpaying if you don't have a handset as the subsidy's already been paid back and your giving them more than a similar sim only deal.0 -
Did yhis chap James have a Northern Ireland accent?....0

Another thing to consider is the term "unlimited" data - this means a whole host of different amounts depending on when you took the contract and who with. Unlimited usually has a fair use policy, and if O2 at the time, decided that 500MB was fair use, then they would describe your allowance as unlimited. I'm not sure they're allowed to do that anymore.0

O2 don't offer the unlimited data contract any more.
So as gjchester says, you have a choice to make.0 -
I'm about to be in the same boat in 10 days time and I'm on a similar deal to you just looked on there web and the deal I have is gone, if I want similar I'm going to have to spend more that's if I want a new phone which tbh I really don't think I do. If I stay with them then they aren't the cheapest at £27 as Tesco are doing iphone sims keep your own number from £15.00.0

You don't need a special iPhone sim.
I think better sim-only deals are available for £8-£15 at giffgaff, chitter-chatter, talkmobile and Three.0
