I don't know if it is spooky stuff going on, but when this post was started, in all honestly without knowing the street names, it was this very car park that I imagined / visualised the event taking place. It is just off University Avenue in the west end of Glasgow. I can never get a parking space there either!!

Found a few nice quotes from the government Traffic Signs Manual, applicable in Scotland as well as England and Wales.
P8 - "All proposed assemblies should be critically
examined to ensure that the intended messages are
    clear."

    P69-70 On-Street Parking
"The signs to diagrams 661.2A and 661.3A
must be used with the bay marking to diagram
1028.4, 1032 or 1033, in each case with no legend."

Sign 661.2A shows a blue P and the words Pay at Machine along with an arrow indicating the direction of the closest machine.
"Pay at Machine" does not appear on the sign photographed in this case, so is it complying with the regulations at all, apart from being so dirty it's virtually illegible?

    Good research, Maryhillgirl.

On pepipoo I have certainly seen the argument used that a sign is not compliant when it says 'pay at meter' (wrong, out of date) as it MUST say 'pay at machine' nowadays.

Your sign doesn't say either, so does not instruct you where to get the ticket at all - and if the arrow points to those machines at the car park entrance then how could you have known differently, if the machine along the street was obscured completely by a bush?

I go on pepipoo forums every day and that muddy sign is the WORST obscured sign I have seen in years, except for those that are physically covered up by scaffolding etc! It also looks really quite old as I would expect to see 'pay at machine' and have never before seen 'ticket must be attached to WINDSCREEN' (which you did, so you complied with the sign).

I think you will win this one even if the Council play fast and loose with a fob-off rejection at first. Please show your sign and your PCN on pepipoo forums for an expert opinion on signage compliance - but they will also want to see the small print on the back of that PCN.

  • I'm very pleased with my photo upload success - that sign's a beauty, isn't it? Matches the state of most of Glasgow's roads, ancient and dilapidated. Bit like myself.
So should I just post the original story, plus photos, on Pepipoo? Plus the back of the compliance notice? Could I win a prize for finding the best/worst signage in the UK?

Yep, you have to register first and wait for clearance to post AFAIK, usually same day.

Then start a new topic (read a few other thread-starters first to see what people have to supply by way of info):

    http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showforum=30

They will need all small print so the back of the PCN as well, but your other pics are also great, very clear (not that the sign is clear at all!).

They are very friendly & helpful and you could ask if your sign wins the 'muddiest, illegible old sign in the UK' prize!

Never done it but here's the FAQs response about pics:

    http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=36858

And you can post pics straight away as a newbie on there (unlike here). Look at some other threads, see how people size their pics. I know they should not be as an attachment, but hosted (which you seem to have done very well on here).
