Baseband version - i9100bukg1
Build number- gingerbread.bukg2
Its my first samsung so aint use to how it works. I connected to kies and all it said was unable to update.

The firmware available to you is dependent on whether the network that supplied your phone (if any) have vetted and approved the update. If there's currently no update available for your phone, it suggests to me there's either no update available, or your network haven't yet approved it (if they ever will).0 -
Can you not just download the latest firmware from samsung themselves.0

Yes, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to install it.0

Not if it's a network supplied/branded phone
As with a vast majority of other phones - unless you bought it sim-free, then you won't get any updates direct from the manufacturer - you will always need to wait for the networks to "vet" and "network optimise" (or some other spurious network/corporate gobble-de-gook phrase) the updates.
If the networks have subsidised your phone in any way - then they believe it is their divine right to adjust the software and make you wait until they see fit to release it out.0 -

How do you know if its branded. Theres no voda sign on it or a sign when it loads up like it did on 3 with my old nokia so I assume its a unlocked phone. I dont see why vodafone would want to stop any recent updates with out them approvoving it. Its a samsung phone not vodafone.0 -
If Kies say KG1 is the latest it means that your phone provider has not updated further than that version .
KG7 may well be out but it may not be for your phone and may be only released to certain markets . China is running KH5 fer instance .
Release pattern is one Samsung release stock rom KK1 that is passed to the vendors they then pass the update on or not brand it or not and its uploaded to the Kies servers whenever that occurs .
Samsung stock roms are available outside of the Samsung update/warranty path but that is at your risk .
Latest leaked stock Samsung rom is KH4 .

If your phone has been supplied by Vodafone, there's a high chance it'll be locked to Vodafone, and have Vodafone branded firmware (even if there's nothing specifically 'Vodafone' that jumps out at you when you use your device). You will have to wait for Vodafone to approve the update before you can get it.0 -
I debranded my o2 phone and installed the KH3 on android 2.3.4 the battery life is much better im able to get nearly 3 days instead of 1.Best place to visit for Roms and firmware is XDA you will require Odin though to do a manual update.0

Yeah there is always the possibility of hacking and modifying your phone to get the latest update, but it's far from ideal, and will likely void your warranty.0 -

True but a straightforward stock Samsung update will not invalidate your warranty via Samsung but may invalidate your phone providers warranty .
But a warning once on the dark side you stay their and do other stuff as Android is not a locked down OS .
