NowMobile National Roaming

Just noticed on NowMobile's web site:
NATIONAL ROAMING (available from 12th September)
National roaming helps you stay connected when you're in the UK and loose the signal of our home network. You may see another Network name on your handsets display, this is normal and you can still access all Now Mobile services as normal and your bundles and charges will stay the same. This will work automatically, however you may need to switch your network selection to Automatic. To use data services you will also need to allow your phone to use data roaming within your handset settings.

Does anyone have any more details on this? Is this just related to the Orange/T-Mobile tie-up or is it proper national roaming?

Orange, T-Mobile (Everything Everywhere) and 3UK are allowing cross network roaming between them. Previously there was an arrangement for 2G access, but this will be for 3G to facilitate broadband when one network has limited or no capacity/coverage, and the other does.

    No such deals from Vodafone/O2.

All the Orange/T-Mobile MVNO's have had national roaming added from yesterday, and anyone who opted out of the signal sharing have now been opted back in.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Are you sure about that? I was under impression the 3G roaming was on hold until (at least) the court case relating to service contracts for the existing network.

I had heard this too, but I've not heard of any suspension of implementation as a result. How/whay/why MVNO's do really is no business of customer - they have not signed up to a 'network' just someone who is promising them coverage (and sometimes, not even that) to access a cellular network - usually unspecified. Since the network operator and the 'virtual' operator are their own agents to decide the facilities offered the consumer is in no position to complain if - for example, they had 5 bars one day and no signal the next due to the expiry of one agreement and the establishment of another.

Another reason why I'm reluctant to have any faith in the monkey, rather than the organ grinder.

Everyone has been opted back in and MVNO's opted in as the next phase of rollout (ie: 3G) is starting soon.

Just a quick heads up to say the The Phone Co-op (an Orange MVNO) now allows national 2G roaming on the T-mobile signal, too, confirming what simax says.
