Whe does a contract actually start?

I ordered a new MIFi E586 device from three on their 1 month
£15.99 plan with £49.99 upfront for the device, now I dont actually
want / need the contract, so want to cancel asap.

I just done it to get the dongle cheaper, after quidco it works out as
£42 for the dongle plus one months usage, or £58 with 2 months
rental, so cheaper than paying the PAYG price of £89.99 either way

Now to my question, I need to give 30 days notice to cancel, so does the
contract start from today, now that my order has been processed and about
to be despatched or does it start from the day of delivery?

If from today can I phone up to cancel and give my 30 days notice to
cancel today and only end up paying one months line rental?

Cheeky I know but its all about saving a few quid :rotfl:

If it was a new contract bought over a phone or internet and you have not used anything, you can cancel everything within 7 days after receiving it according to the DSR.

Otherwise you don't need to know the start day. You have to pay for the next 30 days after giving the notice.

Thanks but what im trying to work out is whether I will need to pay one or 2 months rental, if the contrat starts today when the order is despatched and I phone to cancel when its delivered I will already be part way in to month one, so month 2 will also need to be paid.

It was over the internet and a new contract.

I dont think the DSR cover it as I dont actually want to cancel and return the device, otherwise it would be easy, cancel, return the stuff and recieve no charges.

What im getting at is when is 'day 1' so my 30 days notice wont make me roll over in to month 2.

The contract starts when the sim is activated. Normally it is after you receive it, but it is difficult to say.
If the contract started already and you call them today it will be 30 days from today.
If it has not started yet it will be 30 days from the start.

Are you sure quidco will pay if you cancel after a month?
