Data Roaming caps

Hi all,
i've just returned home from spain, whilst there i used my mobile to browse, e-mail and text. (i took the 16MB cap off, because i knew i'd soon get to 16MB, using this for mine and husbands business)
i did the same last year, looking at the same things.
except this year my bill is £906! (last year £107 which was expected)
only difference this year - the phone BB Torch (upgraded from Bb Bold 9000 both use same BB services)
i've been researching on a few sites and found this from European Commission Info Website:-
http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/roaming/regulation/index_en.htm
i calculate my bill should be about £113.00
Any ideas for a good fight with Orange?

DFW Nerd no. 1191;)
Maximum Debt £33k in 2007  all on CC's (I know, lesson learned; never consolidate and not cut up the cards!)
Now completely debt free, but it was a double edged sword 0

I think the default €50 cap on data roaming applies only if you don't buy any data roaming bundles.
I have no idea how "16Mb cap" that you "took" works.
Also, it would help if you posted your calculations. Was it data only that you think you were overcharged for?0 -
Hi Grumbler,
I didn't buy a bundle.
All UK operators must cap roaming at 12MB for PAYG and 16MB for monthly contracts but you can remove this.DFW Nerd no. 1191;)Maximum Debt £33k in 2007  all on CC's (I know, lesson learned; never consolidate and not cut up the cards!)Now completely debt free, but it was a double edged sword

If they just operate it, how did you 'take' it?
I have never heard about 16Mb and 12Mb caps. I know only about €50 cap: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Commission_roaming_regulations0 -

How did you work out what the bill was? Did you have some form of counter on the phone? Data is charged at £3 a meg out of bundle, so your bill equates to around 300mb
You did opt out of the auto cut off, so as the EU ruling says..
Consumers can also select a different cut-off limit if offered by the operator or opt out of this bill shock safeguard entirely.
Sorry it's not better news but by opting out you removed the bill shock safeguard0 -
It is not clear whether the OP really opted out. What you quoted doesn't say that selecting a different cut-out limit is the same as opting out (removing the limit altogether).Consumers can also select a different cut-off limit if offered by the operator or opt out of this bill shock safeguard entirely.

No but the OP said they took the cap off.
I think we need a lot more clarity about what the OP did and how much they used.0 -
No didnt use a counter, based on the charges Orange have charged me so far i work out i've downloaded approx 180mb. (downloading an average newspaper on a smart phone is approx 170kb, a music file is anything between 3-7mb)
I know roughly what i've downloaded to, based on usage in the uk.
According to the EU information the wholesale price should be no more than 0.50Eu cents per meg, so in my calculation Orange spain are charging Orange UK 800% mark up!
that's not right surely?DFW Nerd no. 1191;)Maximum Debt £33k in 2007  all on CC's (I know, lesson learned; never consolidate and not cut up the cards!)Now completely debt free, but it was a double edged sword

What about the data usage that BB uses in the background? Its sending small packets every 5 seconds to check if you have any email etc (through the RIM server). Over a few days/weeks that soon mounts up. . .0
