If you're going to be helping friends/relatives with PC issues (can be a slippery road IMO btw) have you considered vnc - google it - sounds a cracking idea.
You can hook up to their PC from your so you can trouble shoot etc by seeing trheir screen rather than they describing it down the phone to you.

Good mention, just make sure you get it setup correctly, as it could be a security hazard.
I'd recommend (google for it) UltraVNC. It'll allow you to use keys and I think (haven't used it for a while) it encrypts the signal (whereas I believe plain old VNC is open). And make sure you set a strong password (12 characters+ alpha numeric with symbols).
Ideally it's something you want to run over an SSH tunnel. Not the easiest thing to setup though. Keep meaning to do it for my parents for all the phone calls they give me!"Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
