My first bit of advice is if you are looking at modelling as a money making venture FORGET IT! Most models have to be in the industry for atleast a years and outlay a lot of money paying to travel to tf (free shoots in return for pics) photoshoots. All of the top and published photographers wont look twice till you have a lot of experience under your belt!
If A agency asks for any money in any sort of way STAY WELL AWAY that is the most lilley a scam.
As said above I find that MM is the best moderated site and with the least weirdos but the others are also good. If you would like me to check anyone out (I am a art nude model) I have access to the files which hold all reports of scams and dodgie photographers.0 -

That is a very narrow path and getting there will need not just looks but also determination, hard work and lots of good luck. The modelling world is not for 'stars in their eyes' people , it is cold, hard business and has lot more casualties than succeeders.
Get a few pictures, put them on ModelMayhem ( study the forums on Purestorm to get an idea what to put on) and prepare to be shocked by some of the initial contacts you get. DON'T put an email address on the profile and always use their internal message system for contact.
Sorry if I seem a bit harsh and I doubt anyone would thank me for this post, but it's better to be realistic from the start.
If you need spoonfeeding with the details , then modelling is not the career for you.0 -
Without sounding brutal, you have very little chance of getting noticed by the agencies that supply for M and S and the like if you are sticking to Manchester only.
If you want to even try for the bigger money shots like that you need to get a professional portfolio done which will cost you unless you can pull strings with a photographer friend, then send the portfolio to some of the bigger agencies...... you can find who they are by looking in magazines and in the small print for an article that includes a model they usually include the model agency details.
Other avenues are the magazines like Take A Break etc that feature models from lesser modelling agencies who look for homegrown girl next door models you may be better suited for who may pay you £500 a session to appear on the front cover. And going down from that are more local based modelling agencies who will take you on their books but expect you to do modelling at trade shows or nightclub events where you have to go along and look sexy...... but its not highly paid and not going to be a big career move other than a free night out and a bit of spending money.
Glamour work can make you a fair amount of money but you have to consider if you really want to go down this line. On the one hand you can make more money from it, but on the other, it will kill off any chance you ever have of getting to be a M and S model or any other serious one. Plus your mum may not be as impressed.
Personally, I think you need to research your chosen career path heavily rather than rush in and just try for any local agency. Try googling or Facebook searching modelling agencies, looking in magazines for pictures of girls (and then looking for the agency that supplied them for the shoot) and so on. If you have the look that one needs you MAY get a short lived career in it, but even the bigger models who get booked for multiple shoots don't make their fame and fortune and still need a second career to fall back on when it all comes to an abrupt end! Even models that get paid £3000 a shoot also work in a bar or waitress job in their spare time because the next big shoot might not be for 6 months!
Best of luck with it tho x0 -

im a 30 F bust, wonder how to look for lingerie or manc work, i dont want to do glamour modelling.. this wont be my career just a sideline to make a bit of extra money and have fun, got pics my best mate takes which are good, got 1 last week from the trafford centre and hopefully get another one tomorrow at a photo place, i only want local places in manc, didnt know u had to be tall for bravissimo, wud do small companies as more likely to hire me and never thought to look under pics in mags but most likely the agencies arent here and models are alot taller

Most agencies won't expect to see a professionally done portfolio . usually they want to see a head and shoulders shot without makeup and a natural full length shot. If someone wants to charge you for a full portfolio then it's not worth it. you can build up a set at very little cost by the TF method from different photographers and this will be of much more use to you. Many girls post portfolio's on the net just to be able to impress blokes as they are a 'model'
As someone has already said, don't expect to be paid until you have proved to the industry in general that you are worth the money and if you try to enter modelling 'for a bit of fun' You will soom be disapointed. It can certainly be fun and have it's rewards but when money is changing hands, it becomes serious.
A proper lingerie shoot for a catalogue can cost up to £20000 to set up for a couple of days. If you decide it's not going to be fun because you've got a hangover and so don't turn up, Guess how often you will work again? word gets around.
For starters, set up a profile on Modelmayhem with some of your pictures, then introduce yourself on their furum and ask for a critique. You will get much more valuble advice on a specialist site than you will on here.0 -
i think i did join up there once.. will look into that, thanks

ModelMayhem is a good place to go for getting exposure etc, a lot of freelance photographers and that there that will do photos for you for your time and for you to gain experience.
Careful with some of them though as obviously they can be a bit 'pushy' so only go with ones with testimonials from others who have had shots taken.
I got some great pictures taken on this site from various photographers in various locations! Hope this helps anyway!
Oh and beware of scams from agencies, they will ask you to come for photoshoots, make you pay hundreds of pounds for "professional" pictures and then do nothing with you. If they truly want you at their agency they won't make you pay anything.0
