(Disclaimer: I'm a professional photographer)
Well, first of all you have to have in mind that there is a difference between "good looking/beautiful" and "model stuff". For instance, DJ Qualls is by no means handsome, but he looks interesting enough for photographers and art directors to incorporate in their vision. But this is mostly irrelevant if you just want to do typical catalog work etc. For that, a healthy figure and a cute face is sufficient.
Now, apart from the external appearance, there are other required qualities too. I have photographed normal women as well (brides mostly), and among them I've met some remarkably beautiful women, but who where unbelievably frustrating to work with because they kept staring me like a plank of wood. A bride though, is my client, and it's my job to guide them on how to pose, to make them feel comfortable with themselves and "extract" the look I have in mind. In my experience most women "have it" (men, not that easily), and you just need to help them "get it", depending on their personality, how extrovert they are, their self esteem etc.
Why I am telling you this? Because as a professional model, you must perform on demand. I don't know you, you may turn out to be good at modeling or you may not. But if you get rejected by agencies, don't take it personally. It won't be because they think you're ugly or something. Keep in mind too, that this is a very competitive market.
Finally, like any job, in order to succeed you need to be serious about it, be punctual (for instance, nobody likes a model that doesn't show up on time, letting the whole crew waiting and wasting daylight hours or studio time) and act professionally. It doesn't matter if you intend to do pursue this full time (it's not that easy!), or do it on the side of you main occupation. I had once, a model who came for a magazine photoshoot with not freshly legs and worn out toe polish. Don't be like this.
In order to proceed, you will contact a (serious) modeling agency. But you need to have a portfolio first. You can hire a professional photographer for this, or you can arrange a "time for prints/time for cd" with a photographer who is just starting too, is not established yet and is building his/hers portfolio too. Unfortunately, some creepy GWCs lurk in that category too, so you need to exercise caution. You wanna hear about my new obsession?

Read all the posts on the above thread. there are some good links to internet modelling sites. If you're interested in fashion and lingerie work, probably ModelMayhem would be the better one for you. PS and NM are more for glamour and nude. Also bear in mind that Fashion and promotion models are usually over 5'7" tall so many agencies wouldn't consider you if under that height. 'Petite' models are usually restricted to the types of work they can do. Be carefull of scams and come back if you have any more questions.
Hope that helps0 -
Try Gmodels it's ran by a model. Think you can look them up on facebook. Good luck hun.0

Pure Storm is a good forum.... there are a lot of fake agencies out there that will charge you for doing a test shoot and you never hear from them again. The forum has sections for both models and photographers and does have regular posts about which agencies are reasonable and which are a waste of time.
Some semi-pro photographers and want to be models also frequent the site with the intention of mutually meeting up free of charge to do a shoot for mutual benefit - the photographer keeps copyright of the photos but gives a copy to the model for their portfolio.
If you do meet up with strangers obviously follow common sense and do your homework first.0
