If your friend can get the reminder, then he could renew on line for you (assuming insurance and MOT are in date) by assuming your id online, or could give you the renewal reference number so you can just renew over the phone.

But he cannot renew at the PO without the required documents (insurance cert + MOT)

checked the website again and it seems I will be okay if I have the reminder and do it online. You either need the reminder or the log book, and not both while doing it online. Atleast thats what the initial pages say

That's correct (you can do it by phone or online with the reminder)
