Tax disc while abroad

Hi Guys,

I am currently in India and had completely forgotten about my tax disc as I had left my car at my friends place. He is now reminding me 2 weeks prior to it running out and I am stuck as I dont have the V5C registration certificate or other documents which are locked at home.

Has anyone been in this situation before, is it okay if I call up DVLA and ask them to verify my identity and pay for the tax disc so that they can post it to my home in the UK

Thanks in advance

Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • Do you have a friend or relative that has keys to your house, if so they could get the V5 and give you the document number over the phone, you can tax the car online using this number and the car registration number, as long as the car is not parked on the public highway you needn't worry about being done for fail to display.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
  • Thanks richardw,

I have been there but it is asking for the following

You tell us the vehicle. You will need either the 16 digit reference number shown on your renewal reminder, or the 11 digit reference number from your Registration Document/Certificate (also known as the Logbook) and your vehicle registration mark (numberplate).

and I dont have any of the above as the certificates are at home and I dont have the reminder as its probably lying at home in the post. Will it help if I call them up from India and try to prove my identity
  • Hi interstellaflyer,

yes thats the last option I have, most of my friends have moved quite far away so it would take them the best part of a weekend to come around and retrieve my papers. Although they would have to rummage through my personal docs (bank statements etc). I was hoping that there would be a way with the DVLA & they would consider it since I am abroad

Your friend should be able to identify the reminder (with the details you need) amongst your unopened post without having to go through your drawers.
  • Hi Quentin,

Do I not need the registration number from the V5C certificate to tax the vehicle. Its been so long since I have done it that I no longer remember what I did last time. I guess one can get it done at the post office using just the reminder, is this right..? In which case my friend can do it at the post office for me

is there an e mail address at the dvla for queries or could one of your friends phone on your behalf and explain the situation

They have a webpage which shows all the options to email them

    https://emaildvla.direct.gov.uk

I have just emailed a query to the DVLA and they say they will reply within 3 days. Dunno if they are gonna take forever to get back and the tax disc expires by then. I am tempted to give them a call and see if it helps but calls from here to the UK cost a lot plus I might be waiting forever to talk to someone and explain the situation

if it runs out the end of september i would wait for a response, you still have a few weeks.be a lot cheaper than phoning and being on left on hold.
