Cancelling RAC Breakdown Cover

Hi, apologise if this has been asked before but i couldn't find any information.

My RAC breakdown cover is up for renewal on the 13th October and the letter shows it has increased to about £41. I know that if i was to cancel it and rejoin i could breakdown cover for about £28 so i would rather do this.

However I don't know how to cancel? Well i do but i don't know when to? My current breakdown covers me until 12th October so when would be the right time to call and cancel the automatic re-membership? Also should i go to the bank and cancel my direct debit just incase too?

Appreciate the help!

  • Be careful as you may well end up having your new cover cancelled.

I was going to do the same with the AA when the renewal figure I was given was £24 more than a new member would pay so I contacted them asking why this was as I felt that they were giving preference tonew members instead of trying to keep existing ones.

I was told that this is standard practice with breakdown and insurance companies, and when I said that I would not be renewing my cover I was advised that if I cancelled and took out new membership within 6 weeks it would be cancelled or I would have to pay the full non discounted premium.
  • I've just had a look at their terms and conditions and the RAC are far stricter than the AA.

16.In order for a Member to benefit from any new
Membership offers or promotions, a period of
one year must elapse between the Member
leaving RAC and rejoining. An application to
rejoin before one year has elapsed will be treated
as a renewal and priced accordingly. If you rejoin
RAC within a period of one year We reserve the
right to cancel Your new Membership or request
you pay any additional premium as required
  • So ring the RAC and cancel, and join Green Flag which is cheaper and better (my opinion).

just keep jumping between the three main rescue companies.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

Have you phoned the RAC and haggled? I pay less now than i did 2 years ago with extra cover because
i said thats too dear i can get it cheaper elsewhere.

Been a member for about 15 years though and have called them out 2 or 3 times and not in the last 6 or 7 years.

  • Phone now and try and get them to price match. If they don;t inform them you won;t be renewing so your cover will finish on the expiry date.

    Then cancel your DD

Then go via Quidco or similar and join AA or Green flag whoever is offering best new deals. You will get new customer discount plus the cash back

Finally bookmark this thread and go back to it this time next year and repeat from step one!
  • They are a glaringly sharp operator - making sure they stack the cards against you at every opportunity - they give nothing away and appear to make it up as they go along

My lad had taken his car off the road and forgot to cancel his RAC membership - he is a dolt sometimes - when he needed to inure it for a month and went away on holiday he broke down and called them out twice and they gave him the service he had paid for - simple jobs really and he had to buy a new battery

The renewal went thro in the meantime and they doubled his annual fee which he cannot afford

Then he had reason to call them out agian and they wanted to charge him and extra 25 quid to attaend because the reg no. they had on file was for his old car and yet they had already come out to him twice to the car with the new reg - they are a rip off organisation - avoid at all costs!

I made a point of cancelling the auto-renewal on mine straight after taking it out.

So he didn't cancel it, didn't check his renewal, they fixed his car a couple of time, he didn't inform then of a change in car and the RAC are a rip off merchant.......
