Calling a US mobile that is IN the UK

My father in law has a friend over from the USA. The friend has their US mobile with them. FiL would like to know how much it costs to call his friend's mobile from his landline whilst he is in the UK.

I advised that it would be the same as if he called any mobile in the UK.

Am I correct?

This is not easy to google as all I could find was answers to calling a mobile that is IN the USA.

It will be the same price for him to call the mobile regardless of where in the world that mobile is. Its the mobile owner/call recipient whose call charges vary.
It should be quite easy for your FIL to check on his own call package how much it costs to call a US mobile etc.
For instance, I use Sky as my home phone provider and I get calls to US mobiles free within my call package. So to call that US mobile will be free for me regardless of if the recipient is either stood outside my house or outside the Empire State building. What the other person pays to receive the calls while they are roaming onto a UK network however is dependent on their own supplier's roaming charges

Sorry, the question isn't that clear - thge costs from WHO'S point of view? If the friend is calling the US person;s mobile whilst in the UK, he will be dialling a US International number, so he'll pay the full cost for that. Meanwhile, his friend recieving the incoming call, will pay the international leg of prining the call back from the USA to his mobile handset. He'd be better using a PAYG SIM here, assumiung his phone is unlocked.

No, this is not absolutely correct although the charges are likely to be fairly similar.

The true answer will be that (assuming he is on BT with no international calling plan) if he just dials straight through to the number he will be charged the international BT rate of 17.5p/min peak or 12p/min off peak plus a set up fee of 12.5 pence. However, if he uses one of the cheap 'bypass' providers he should get the per minute charge down to around a penny or less.

On the other hand, the friend is likely to incur significant cost for receiving the calls - obviously this is dependant on their supplier and tariff but is likely to be in the order of $1.50 per minute.

Clear as mud to me - as the scenario costing (as stated) was complete misinformation, something is wrong somewhere...

The scenario was wrong - hence the question.

Your father in law will pay the standard international rate to call a US mobile and his friend will pay his mobile network's international rate to receive the call. As stated above, where the mobile is phsyically located isn't of concern, it's which country that mobile number is from that counts. This is how a UK caller can call a UK mobile for 'free' with inclusive minutes, even if that UK mobile is currently in New Zealand.
