Just spoken to the Halifax regarding whether they charge a cash advance fee. They have said that if I use my debit card (Reward Account) then it will be 2.75% + £1.50 but I'm not sure if this is correct as I think the lady may be confusing this with withdrawing cash abroad.

I did challenge them and said that if I went to the High Street and paid for my foreign currency transaction with a debit card would I be charged the above fee and the response was a definitive yes.

Anyone experienced this as the T&C on the website just says please ask for details.

What I'm really after is a prepaid card by the likes of Fairfx/Travelex etc but dont want to be stung by backdoor fees.

I've used a halifax debit card to collect money from travelex (after ordering online) and not been charged a fee. But the first time I did it, I asked them (Halifax), and they also said I would be charged.

Next time, get a clarity credit card, and withdraw the money from a cashpoint overseas. No charges, and get the mastercard rate.
  • Thanks. Yeah, I suspect the call staff dont know the difference.

Applied for the clarity card and got declined despite having a perfect '999' credit score. Clearly I'm not a profitable customer!

I got a clarity card at 12.9% with a perfect credit score and I am def not a profitable customer
  • Shows the weird way how the banks work.

Probably doesnt help that I have zero credit on my file - never needed it.

If you have your current account with them, I'd tell them I was switching, and make sure you tell them why. If they still don't give you one, then go through with it.

Interesting, I'm searching through these boards trying to find the best way to get 1000 Euro's cash. I have a halifax debit card (reward current account) and a clarity credit card, but there is a limit to how much you can withdraw daily on the clarity card I think (can anyone confirm) and I need the 1000 Euros to pay in cash when I land - the start of my holiday.

I thought the only way I would be able to do it is to take 1000Euros out with me - is there another way? If not whats the best way to get the cash? The travel money comparison websites on this board recommend the places which apparently don't take debit or credit card = so that would mean drawing the equivalent out in punds, visiting them in London and transferring to Euro's? Surely there's an easier way?

Sorry to hijack your thread OP, it was the halifax link that brought me here.
  • I have bought £1000 worth of Euros, some as cash but most put on a pre pay card, used my Halifax debit card for both transactions and not been charged, mine is just a standard current account.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
