blocked driveway?

  • he has moved it :j i did leave a little note on his windscreen asking that he parks a little further back so i can get onto the drive. think he just parks outside mine when someone else is parked outside his house, but the horn and the 3am panic runs to the hospital will be kept for future reference lol

As has been said, it is illegal to obstruct a drop kerb and suspect that your drop kerb will be legitimate, most are and have been there since the initial construction of the house, or if a very old house, since they put the kerb and road in.

If it becomes a real regular problem, most local authority's will come and put you a marking in to try and prevent it happening. We had this problem with our drive and we used to get the drive parked over, mainly on Saturday's, as we have a very popular butchers just a few doors down and a primary school beyond that. Interestingly my LA said that they would only put me a white marking down if it wasn't because of school traffic only!!! I said my biggest problem was the butchers and a few other shops in the village, which is true, and the school was generally not the biggest problem... although they did and still do park over the drive on odd occasions. They came and did it about six weeks later.

We very rarely get a problem now but it is normally from the butchers customers on a Saturday morning and I love going in when they are queing out of the door and asking said person to shift their car. So far, the embarrassment factor is such, that everyone of them has come out and moved their car and apologised, some very profusely!

PS. The butchers are great and even before we had the lines put, they had a sign up asking people to respect our neighbours and not park over peoples' drives.

    Hi

My parents are currently going through the same thing, we have asked the council who said it wasn't there responsibility and the local police said they would only get involved if we wanted to get off the drive in an emergency,
We have asked nicely but unfortunately the neighbour was rude and said tough luck
I think it's disgusting you pay for a driveway and you can't even use it.

I am currently in the process of blocking him in and just not moving it even when he asks, it's a shame though as my parents have just moved into this place and it's making them question the move now.

Hope you get a better resolution

I would avoid the confrontation with him and avoid blocking him, because you are just hacking each other off. I would stick to your guns and tell him it is illegal and you really would like him to stop breaking the law and let your parents use their drive.

I would then log every time he parks over the drive and every time your parents are unable to access their drive. I would ask to see you local Community Police officer, he/she should pop around for a cuppa no problems and explain to them the issue. The community support team, as opposed to you ringing your local station when you have a problem, might be more sympathetic and willing to help.

I suspect they might bob around to see your neighbour and ask him to stop blocking the drive. If not and he just ignores them, I am sure the community team will keep and eye out and if they spot his car over your drive they will take some delight in banging a ticket on his car. He will soon get the message if he gets a couple of tickets. I just think they will be very helpful and this is something worth trying.

Ring up your local station and ask who your community support officer is and they often give you a number to call them on.
  • My grandparents live in Cheltenham - you can imagine what parking is like at certain times of the year with the Races etc. They have a dropped curb, two big wooden gates and you can see straight in and see there are two cars parked, ready to go when they wish to go out. Some silly !!!!!!s park over it. Traffic wardens used to put a ticket on (we are very close to town centre). But last year some parked over the gate area for the whole duration of the races. We rang the police.
Apparantly (don't quote me though!) if they are not stopping you from getting out - as in you don't need to leave the house - it is not an offence! Nothing they can do as they didn't NEED to go out. Anyway, a day later the car still hadn't gone. I rang the local station, explained that this was not on as they needed to get to appointments and couldn't get out. Bingo, some policemen came, picked up the car, moved it down a space or so, clamped it and stuck a ticket on it. We haven't had a car park across it since!
