Better to switch it off if you are away or not using it for days, it just gets expensive on ink if you are switching it on to print a page then switching it off

How does the ink level monitor work?

When you change a cartridge, a switch inside the printer is activated that tells the printer that it now has a certain volume of ink available. With every document printed, the ink used is deducted from this value and the remaining ink is determined.

When you run the cleaning cycle or switch on your printer this also uses ink that again is deducted from the volume.

The ink level is therefore a purely calculated amount and a cost effective way to print is to wait till the print becomes faint. It's not recommended that you start to print high quality photo prints with the low ink icon flashing.

On the HP's with the '363' carts, no ink is lost during the cleaning cycle as the printer sucks the ink back in rather than pumping it out.
I had an HP 3210 and I got over 500 pages per cart. in comparison, my Epson gave me less than 200 and the Canon I have inherited from my son does about the same.

For high-volume printing look for either a 'Continuous Ink Feed System' (CIFS) for your printer, or buy a 2nd-hand colour laser.
